What is the "Scanner" in the ORAS demo?

In the ORAS Demo, this scientist tells me ''but that scanner... I've got to find that scanner.''

What scanner?
Where do I find it, and what rewards will I get if I do get it?

The Scanner is a Key Item in the original Ruby and Sapphire games.

It can be found in the Abondoned Ship, and is tradable with Captain Stern for a DeepSeaScale or DeepSeaTooth.
It is not obtainable in the demo, but the Scientist is an obvious hint that the Scanner will appear again in the remakes.
