Yanmega. The Ogre Darner Pokémon. It's name has perplexed me since Gen IV. I know what an ogre is; a big, green, terrifying monster (although most are like onions.) I know that "darn" is a more proper term for "damn", which in ancient times meant to condemn someone for eternity in Hell. But why on earth would Game Freak create a huge dragonfly that tosses ogres into the underworld? Are there any myths about monster dragonflies that hunt ogres? I am genuinely confused here.

I think these are the Ogres they took into the underworld

Yanmega is based of the Green Darner, one of the largest and fastest Dragonfly in existence. This is also supported as Yanmegas shiny forme looks like the Uncommon Blue Female ones.

The Ogre part has stumped me a bit. It is big and green like an ogre but seems unfitting. Maybe GF just wanted a better name then Green Darner?

That makes sense. The "ogre" part probably comes from it's intimidating appearance. I still wish it was based on some ye olde dragonfly god though :(
Wait… if the green darner is the fastest dragonfly… is that why Yanmega gets Speed Boost :O

Ok, Grime Time seriously good question I was perplexed to at first. The ogre part is correct as yanmega is green and vicious, as supported by its Black/white 2 pokedex entry, It prefers to battle by biting apart foes’ heads instantly while flying by at high speed. The darner part is actually named for the green darner the fastest dragonfly on the planet. I hope I helped.
