So in Rydel's Cycles, one of the books says the Mach Bike can be used to speed over cracks in the ground. I have never needed it for this purpose, what does this even mean?

There are cracks in Granite Cave and Sky Pillar, and successfully crossing them will reward you with items and Rayquaza. The only way to cross them is to ride a mach bike for some number of steps to build enough speed to go over the cracks.
that's only in the originals this is ORAS

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, a variation of a hole tile appears: a cracked tile. These cracked tiles appear in the Sky Pillar, Mirage Tower, and Granite Cave. Cracked tiles can be crossed if the player has enough momentum, which is only possible when riding on the Mach Bike at full speed.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Sootopolis Gym continues to feature cracked ice tiles as part of its puzzle. Mach Bike-required cracked tiles no longer appear.

In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the Mach Bike can be used to ride across tiles of floor that are cracked, for example, the ones shown below that appear on the second floor of Sky Pillar. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, there are no longer floor tiles that are cracked. The part in the manual about the Mach Bike being able to ride over cracked floor tiles was probably only included in ORAS as a reference to the older games.
