If your first party Pokemon holds it, the encounter rate for wild Pokemon will be reduced by 1/2 (50%) in Gen II, 1/3 (33.3%) in Gen III onward. In Sword and Shield, it reduces the chance of hidden encounters by 7/8 (85.7%).
