Can I turn the Gameboy on and off, to hatch the same egg in hopes of a shiny?

Ive been trying to breed a shiny for a long time now and have hatched numerous eggs. I recently got the Blue Ditto with the help of a game link and Pokemon Blue. So I'm in the process of making lots of eggs with my Blue Ditto and currently a Charizard, in hopes of hatching a shiny Charmander. Can I save the game right before the hatch, and turn the game on and off hatching the same egg until one is shiny or do I carry a bunch of eggs with me at once like I've been doing? This is for the Pokemon Crystal btw, Gameboy Color. Also, will the egg be a different color if it's shiny or does one not know until it hatches?

The shininess of a Pokemon is determined upon receiving the Egg. This means that it cannot be soft resetted for. An Egg looks no different when shiny, you have to hatch it to find out if it's shiny or not.
