The only Pokemon you can catch is Pikachu actually. You are also given an Ash Greninja as soon as you leave your house, and after you beat the small story of the demo, you can transfer either Pokemon to the full SM games. I can't remember if you can catch more than one Pikachu, but I know you can only catch that species.
