Can you trace a Pokemon on your side of the battlefield?

Question

There are some very overpowered abilities and with trace you can get some of these abilities on a Pokemon which would not usually be able to get it. Can you send out a Pokemon with a ability you want to trace, (in a double battle) then send out a Pokemon with trace to trace that ability?

I don't think it ever traces an allied pokemon's ability. It only traces enemy's and I think it is random in doubles

Trace changes into the Ability of a random adjacent opponent.

No, it can only copy an opponent's ability.
