Gen 9 RU Choice Specs

Tera Type: Ground

Modest Nature

A Choice Specs set that utilizes Arboliva's base 125 Special Attack. Leaf Storm is a poweful Grass STAB that can be more powerful when Grassy Terrain from Arboliva's Seed Sower is up. Leaf Storm is nice to use early- mid-game in matches. Giga Drain is for an accuracte Grass STAB that is useful late-game in matches that can heal you, and it doesn't have the -2 Special Attack drop like Leaf Storm. Hyper Voice is used for a Normal STAB that does nice neutral damage to Pokemon such as Altaria, Rotom-Mow, Rotom-Heat, and Lurantis. Earth Power provides nice coverage against Fire, Steel, and Poison-types such as Salazzle, Revavroom, Magnezone, Arcanine, Copperajah, and Dragalge. The Tera Type is Ground since it boosts Arboliva's Earth Power and can block a potential Volt Switch.

252 Special Attack EVs with a Modest Nature and Choice Specs allow Arboliva to hit as hard as possible. 44 Speed EVs allow Arboliva to outspeed Dragalge. The rest of the EVs are used in HP for bulk.

  • Strength Sap deals with threatening physical attackers that can force a switch out, or you can use Protect to get a safe turn for leech seed recovery.
  • Energy Ball: strong STAB move that can lower an opponent's Special Def. Or you can use Dazzling Gleam to deal with fighting types it can survive against.
  • Leech Seed: good recovery option, works well with protect in my opinion.
  • Synthesis: Extra Recovery, works well in sun and harvest will have a 100% chance of activating.

This build provides general-purpose defensive support and healing for Tera Raids. It works against opponent physical attackers, special attackers, hybrid attackers, and even status-inflicters. It also works regardless of the opponent's type and ability, since none of this Arboliva's attacks depend on targeting the opponent or changing stats (either your opponent's or your allies').

Seed Sower (ability) provides passive healing for everyone, halves damage from several common Ground attacks (e.g. Earthquake), and is activated/reactivated automatically upon receiving direct damage (i.e. without having to spend a turn using a move).

Reflect (move) and Light Screen (move) each decrease the damage from a certain category of attack for everyone on your team by 50%. You may choose to use only one or both, depending on the opponent. Either way, Light Clay (item) makes the screen(s) last 8 turns. Moreover, screens are not removed when a Tera Raid boss removes its own negative effects or removes you and your allies' positive effects. Neither are screens prevented from being set when a Tera Raid boss has its shield.

Safeguard (move) is a pseudo-screen that prevents you and your allies from being given any non-volatile status condition (including confusion) by the opponent. Unfortunately, it lasts for only 5 rounds since Light Clay doesn't extend Safeguard (unlike Reflect and Light Screen). However, Safeguard does have all the other benefits like a screen (e.g. it can't normally be removed by Tera Raid bosses; it can be set even when a Tera Raid boss has its shield; etc.).

Pollen Puff (move) is technically a damaging attack (i.e. it can be used when you are Taunted), but its purpose is to heal your allies. When Pollen Puff targets an ally, it heals that ally by 50% of its max HP. You should use Pollen Puff when only one ally needs healing (so that you don't have to waste a multi-ally "Heal Up" cheer), when you are out of "Heal Up" cheers, or whenever you already have screens up.

Regarding stats, this build has the EVs and nature to maximize survivability in the face of both physical attackers and special attackers (and especially hybrid attackers). At level 100, this Arboliva will have 360 HP, 279 Def, and 280 SpD (including EVs, IVs, and the Calm nature). If you are building this Arboliva for a specific purpose (instead of general-purpose or hybrid), feel free to change the Def/SpD ratio and nature to maximize only Def or SpD instead of both simultaneously. Either way, Atk should be minimized to mitigate damage from the occasional Foul Play. Finally, SpA does not warrant EV investment since Pollen Puff heals exactly 50% of the target's max HP when you target an ally, regardless of your SpA.


Note that whenever you already have screens up, there may be nothing else for you to do except Pollen Puff. However, even if your allies are already at full health, it is still more beneficial to use Pollen Puff to target an ally for proactive healing than to target the opponent for damage. This is because by the time Arboliva uses Pollen Puff, your allies will likely have taken damage and will need healing -- Arboliva is quite slow, so you should try to anticipate the need for healing in advance!

Gen 9, Tera Raid attacker

This build is a self-healing special Grass attacker for Tera Raids. It has high sustain (both passive and active) and moderate damage output (but consistent).

The most common scenario is to open with Leech Seed (move) and then repeat Giga Drain (move) until the raid is over. Fortunately, Leech Seed is not removed when a Tera Raid boss removes its own negative effects. Moreover, Miracle Seed (item) increases both your damage output as well as your healing, since the amount that Giga Drain heals is proportionate to the damage dealt. Similarly, Seed Sower (ability) creates Grassy Terrain which not only grants passive healing to both you and allies, but also increases the damage/healing of Giga Drain even further.

The other two moves are situation-dependent. Solar Beam (move) is for early-raid when one of your allies has brought Koraidon, who creates Sunny weather with its ability Orichalcum Pulse. Magical Leaf (move) is for those uncommon (but still existent) late-raid scenarios when your opponent has either increased their Evasion or decreased your Accuracy.

The EV spread and nature are consistent with a slow-but-tanky special attacker. The remaining 4 EVs are put into Def to maximize survivability because Arboliva's base Def is lower than its base SpD. Atk has 0 IVs in order to minimize damage from the occasional Foul Play.


Variants:

  • Replace Leech Seed with Sunny Day (move) for more guaranteed damage output at the cost of self-healing.
  • Replace Miracle Seed with Leftovers (item) for more guaranteed self-healing at the cost of damage output.
  • Replace Magical Leaf with Sweet Scent (move) for more benefit to your allies at the risk of not being able to use it when a Tera Raid boss has a shield.

An offensive(?) set Arboliva can use in RU. Leaf Storm is used for a powerful Grass STAB. Earth Power provides coverage against Fire-, Poison-, and Steel-types such as Magnezone, Dragalge, and Perrserker, Salazzle, and Copperajah. Encore is useful to prevent setup sweepers such as Venomoth from using Arboliva as setup fodder. Strength Sap allows Arboliva to recover HP and lower the Attack stat of opposing Pokemon.

252 HP EVs are used for bulk. 92 Speed EVs allow Arboliva to outspeed uninvested base 50 Pokemon such as Perrserker and Hariyama. 92 Speed EVs also lets you outspeed Dragalge. The rest of the EVs are used in Special Attack to give Arboliva's attacks as much power as possible.

Gen 9 OU (Professional Hurter)

I use it more in OU than in RU, and it does better up here. This acts as my tank and special hurter. To make up for its poor physical bulk, Strength Sap for recovery and its physical problems. Like me, Arbolivia cannot do anything without support and some heavy pushing. But with that, it can help your team a ton if you have a bunch of Kingambit weak Pokemon, like Gholdengo, and even help fight Gholdengo.

I was going to put Chein-Pao, but showdown decided to be stinky and ban that. Instead, I would use Weavile (which I assume will rise to at least UU since Pao got banned). It hurts Special Tanks like Garchomp and Grass/Flying types. For Corviknight, you can at least Knock Off, which the vile metal bird does not appreciate, and Arbolivia can freely chip with Leech Seed and Tera Blast Fire.

Please don't hurt my feelings down below (I used an Arbolivia in Violet named Juicy and I am sentimentally attached to all Arbolivia).

Offensive Arboliva. Assault Vest boosts its special defense stat REALLY high allowing Arboliva to be a strong special attacker without having to sacrifice any Evs for special defense. Giga Drain for healing, Energy Ball/ Leaf Storm and Hyper Voice for dual STAB, Earth Power for coverage.

Ah yes, another Leech Seed monster, this time specially defensive. Alternate between Protect and Leech Seed/Sub/Giga Drain every turn. Subs are easily replenished by Sitrus Berry & Harvest, as well as Leech Seed. Tera Ghost for spinblocking, special bulk investment to help that 125 SpD.

Light Screen and reflect for added bulk and allows teamate some more safety when setting up. Dazzling Gleam hits both opponents, making both weakened and easy pick off kills. Terrain Pulse is extremely effective if against anything that may want to set up a terrain (Miraidon) or helpful once been hit as you now have a 100bp stab move (if you haven't terrastlized) and little recovery from it.
