I have started sword recently and got my Grookey to Rillaboom, but every time I'm in a gym battle trying to gigantimaxing it just dynamaxes. So it's been confused if he can naturally gigantimax but that's before the champion or, the dlc is needed to gigantmax him.

No, the Sword/Shield starters cannot gigantamax without the DLC. The Gigantamax Factor is necessary for a Pokémon to Gigantamax, which the starters do not have at the beginning of the game. They'll need to drink the Max Soup, introduced in the Isle of Armor, to gain the Gigantamax Factor.

I vividly remember my cinderace in Shied g maxing in a dynamax raid but I was quite young at the time tho so I might be remembering it wrong but I never got either dlc and I think that was my 1st time seeing a g max cinderace so not normally but in max raid battles

Was it dynamax or gigantimax?
why does this getting downvoted
Probably because you can't naturally gigantamax with the starters given to you at the start of the game.
It also goes against the other answer and my 600 hours of shield knowledge.
