Is there a glitch with my theif move?

Question

I was not holding an item and I stole the light ball from reds pikachu with theif after I beat him my light ball was not there! what happened?! (Second Battle.)

Could be a glitch. Or you could have had an item to knowing it. But also it's just a light ball, they're not the hardest to find. Might I add that it only has a 40% chance of steLing an item so maybe you never got the light ball.
