I would like to make two simple suggestions for chat.
Mentioning
Currently addressing a single user can be difficult, if multiple conversations are happening. How about a simple button at the side of someone's username that allows you to mention that user. The mention would simply add to the text box with a "@username". This isn't too difficult and I feel implementing it would not take too much effort. Simple, but helpful.
Colour coding
I would like to add to the previous suggestion by colour coding each username as it could help distinguish usernames and could be used with the mentioned feature.
