I always found upvoting/downvoting as liking and disliking so I am basically asking why can't you like your own posts.

If you could upvote your own posts, you could very easily get a load of points from posts that are less than good. I'd have 8,400 more points if I upvoted every single one of my posts, if I could.

Pretty much everyone would just upvote all of their own posts, so it's kind of false scaling pointwise. Some sites that also have a voting system that has you "upvote" yourself by default, but the scaling is accounted for.
