I'll actually be writing up a more in-depth review of the X-Files on my wall soon enough, but for a short little explanation of what it is:

Agent Dana Scully of the FBI is assigned to the X-Files to provide a more scientific viewpoint on the cases there. The X-Files is run by Agent Fox Mulder, a man with a reputation in the FBI for believing in the paranormal and extraterrestrial. Their job is to investigate cases that seem to defy logic and reality. Along the way they end up facing a vast government conspiracy to hide the "truth" from the public.

The show varies between two formats. Usually, they have monster-of-the-week episodes, which don't hold much bearing to the overall plotline and encompass only one episode. Then there are episodes (usually multi-part) that relate to the whole alien/government conspiracy.

The show is sci-fi, although more grounded than something like Doctor Who. Many of the episodes have thriller/horror elements to them, and the show shares many elements of your cop drama, although for most of the series they manage to avoid falling into the pitfalls that tend to plague cop dramas. What is quite surprising is how funny it is, as they have some very clever writing that satirizes the genre.

The first five seasons are very much worth watching, and is some of the best television I've ever seen.
