Hello, I’m Zorua and this is the second VGC team I’ve posted on here. So far it has been doing well and has been working for me great, but I’ll like to see what you guys think and if you have any suggestions to improve the team.
When I was thinking of what to put in my next VGC team I thought “I want a team with Tailwind, Breloom, a not very common mega and a Pokemon from my ‘Pokemon I want to use in a team’ list. What I mean by the list is just that I have a few Pokemon which I thought looked like they worked well in battle and I wanted to use myself. Anyway, my current team almost has all of the above. To be honest, I’m really surprised how good this team has been for me considering it’s just a few interesting Pokemon I like thrown together, then tweaked to help with my weaknesses. So now let us take a glance at the team:
Talonflame @ Wacan Berry
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 60 HP / 196 Atk / 52 Def / 60 SpD / 140 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Tailwind
- Brave Bird
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
I decided that Talonflame would be my Tailwind setter for my team as it’s almost guaranteed to set it up except for Fake Out+strong attack. I decided to go for a more supportive set to help the rest of the team. Now you might be wondering what the EVs do and why Wacan Berry? Well, the Berry halves damage from an electric attack, this is to survive Thundurus’ Thunderbolt and maybe proceed to Taunt it sometimes. This puts the opponent in a difficult position of what to do in the next turn. Taunt is also very useful against other Tailwind and Trick Room setters, and I just find it a useful move. The speed EVs and Jolly nature allow to outspeed max speed Thundurus, as well as base 110’s. The defensive EVs makes me survive a Double-edge from Mega-Kangaskhan when at -1 attack, and a specs Dark Pulse from Hydregion. I did this so I could Will-O-Wisp more things, as well as Talonflame sometimes being able to stay in for four turns to set up another Tailwind, which has happened several times. I dumped the rest into attack to do as much chip damage as possible.
Metagross @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body --> Tough Claws
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Punch
- Protect
- Iron Head
- Zen Headbutt
This slot was previously the ‘not very common mega’. It was Glalie, but I found that it just didn’t work for me, weather it was my natural playstyle or the rest of the team, I only brought in in about 1 in 10 games, and the games I did bring Glalie it never used Explosion. So, yesterday I added a mega which I thought would work well with the rest of the team, Metagross. In the few battles I’ve used it in I can tell it has been a very good, vast improvement. It provides better overall bulk and more offence. Pretty standard moveset, Jolly nature to outspeed base 108’s and maybe tie with other 110’s. It is debated on the steel STAB move, I previously had Meteor Mash but this battle made me change my mind to Iron Head. Ice Punch to be rid of dragons and Genie’s quicker.
Breloom @ Focus Sash
Ability: Technician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Spore
- Mach Punch
- Bullet Seed
- Protect
If you read the intro you would have been expecting this. Breloom and Tailwind work very well together, it will be a not a fun time for opponents Pokemon as they’ll be sleeping though some of the battle. This is the standard set, can’t say too much about this. Many people will know what it does but it can still be a pain to handle. I’ve found it very useful in most of my battles. The 4 HP EVs are so I can survive a max attack, choice banded Talonflame’s Brave Bird with one HP ;)
Rotom-Wash @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Trick
This came as an addition to the team as a reliable counter to bulky waters other than Breloom, namely Suicune. I chose specs to get KOs it otherwise would not, and Will-O-Wisp was already on Talonflame and Breloom also had Spore for status, so more offense seemed the way to go. The EV spread is fully offensive, and it’s proved useful so far and it can get lots of damage done on neutral targets too. Max speed as it jumps over those base 80’s if needed. It’s still very bulky without investment. I have Trick as the last slot to shut down any support Pokemon.
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 30 Def / 30 SpD
- Substitute
- Protect
- Heat Wave
- Earth Power
I love Heatran! I used it for my last team and it did amazing, and in this team it doesn't fail to impress either. It can sometimes clutch out a win with substitute later in the game, so I sometimes might and try to get rid of his checks and counters before he comes out. If you’re wondering about the IVs I caught this ingame and the stat doesn't actually change at level 50 unless I EV train into it. Standard set but it works, I have Earth Power for opposing Heatrans and I just find it more useful than Flash Cannon.
Scrafty @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 100 Atk / 100 Def / 52 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Snarl
- Fake Out
- Drain Punch
- Stone Edge/Knock Off?
This thing is really bulky and can last for the majority of the match, I only just added this to the team very recently yet it still has proven itself for the team. One of Cybertron’s (A Poketuber) recent battle videos showed me that Scrafty got access to Snarl and I wanted to see how it would work for me. It was also on my ‘Pokemon I want to use in a team’ list. I really enjoy Assault Vest to tank special hits. EV spread is just for all round bulk and to do decent damage. Rest of the set is standard but I have Stone Edge instead of Knock Off to quickly be rid of Charizard which gives the team some problems. Although I do want Knock Off for the item loss as well as doing damage to types that resist fighting, and ghost types.
Ludicolo in rain can also give me some problems with Scald, Giga Drain and Ice Beam. Terrakion can Close Combat most of my team as well if I let it to.

One of the many battle where Wacan Berry proves useful on Talonflame.

Scrafty…. is…. amazing! Snarl really came into use, and it clutches out two 2/3 HP survivals!
So that’s my VGC team and hope you like it, if you have any Pokemon replacements or improvements/suggestions please tell me. Also, I might put up a brief team building process later if you want me to.
