“Hello, girl and boy,” Vivacio said, addressing them, seemingly having forgotten them entirely, making Griffin a bit sour. “I assume you will need a healing station, as you probably got mercilessly wrecked by those lovely trainers. By ‘lovely,’ I mean silly. Anyways, follow me, or not, if you want to be brutally defeated by Fernette.”

“How many trainers did you face?” Griffin asked breathlessly.
“Two,” Penelope said with consternation. She did not appear to have had a great time.
“What were their names?”
“Flora and Fauna,” Penelope said with an eye roll. “They would’ve been more suitable for a soap opera than a gym course.”

After realizing she had lost, Venia collapsed dramatically, letting out an even more dramatic gasp. Soon she dissolved into a pile of tears and started sobbing uncontrollably. Griffin wondered how often she lost to constitute such an over-the-top reaction at this particular occasion.
“Um, can you show me my way out?” Griffin asked tentatively, aghast at Venia’s bizarre reaction. Venia pointed to the hedges whilst sobbing, and Griffin was perplexed.
“I can’t walk through the hedges,” Griffin said with certainty. “Then this whole puzzle would be rather pointless.”
Venia shook her head, and Griffin noticed something peculiar. The hedges started to dismantle and make way to a new path.
“Begone!” Venia exclaimed dramatically, and Griffin quickly exited Venia’s arena before he became damp with her tears.

The “beastly” Pokemon Venia had referred to appeared about as large and beastly as a piece of corn.

i made another bizarre character. she's a gym trainer named venia, who is completely bizarre and ostentatious

“My name is Venia!” the trainer said ostentatiously. “Face me! You must defeat me to advance any further, which will certainly never happen!”
Griffin rolled his eyes at Venia’s braggadocio.
“Time for my beastly Pokemon to be unleashed!” Venia said grandly, tossing a Pokeball with as much as pompousness as one could possibly muster.

no, it isn't. hedge mazes are very common things

“I will also serve as your escort. As you see, I have many jobs here,” he flaunted, and Griffin and Penelope exchanged a look. “First, to reach Fernette, you will need to advance through a hedge maze. It’s not very difficult, though it may be challenging for children as stup- er, inexperienced as yourselves.”

“Okay,” Vivacio said indifferently. “Well, there’s no formal procedure, so go on ahead. Your friend, whatever his name is, will go five minutes after you, or at least however long I feel like five minutes is.”
