Very interesting question. I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.
You're right that they do have a solid chunk in common. However, I believe that N was a complete dunce. Why? Because the whole moral of Team Plasma seems to be 'you're oppressing your Pokemon so release them'. While some Trainers seem to be abusive toward their Pokemon, most aren't, and most Pokemon genuinely want to be with their Trainers. It's not just asking them to, it's forcing them to. They steal Pokemon in order to 'liberate' them. The Munna stolen from the little girl, for instance. And while you may say that that's Team Plasma, not specifically N, I believe N had a darn big part in it, being the king and all. Now, I haven't beat BWB2W2 (I played through most of Black and I'm decently far into White 2 I think), so I don't know all of the details of what happened to N, but he was king of Team Plasma for a time, which is undeniable. Gladion was in Team Skull as well, which I'm not exactly giddy about, but he wasn't the king of it. He didn't seem to have much respect from the Team Skull members, while with N, I'm pretty sure the Team Plasma members loved him. Honestly, if N wasn't in Team Plasma for a time, I likely wouldn't hate him as much. So that begs the question: why don't I hate Gladion for being in Team Skull for a time? As previously stated, he didn't seem very important in Team Skull, and I'm pretty sure didn't sway their actions. He didn't go out and steal Pokemon as far as I know (other than Type: Null which in my opinion was for a good reason), and he didn't tell the Team Skull Grunts to go out and steal Pokemon as far as I know. I'm very sure that he didn't honestly believe that Pokemon should be abused and sold for money. N, however, seemed to honestly believe that Pokemon should be 'liberated'. They've both made mistakes and all, but it's harder for me to just ignore the mistakes of someone I hate than someone I like.
There are other reasons I dislike N, mainly his appearance. Lame reason? Perhaps. But I'll explain that as well just because. I don't think N looks good. He kinda gives me the creeps with the way he spreads out his arms like he wants a frickin' hug or something. I know that he doesn't want a hug but still. Also, I don't really like his hair. Yes, I like Wally and Gau, who have green hair, but I don't like N's hair. That doesn't make sense? Yeah, it really doesn't. But I just don't. I'm like that sometimes, my reasons don't really make sense. And it looks like he's wearing a Rubik's Cube on his neck. I know it's not a Rubik's Cube, but it missed a good shot at one. I think Gladion looks a lot better. Blond is one of my favorite hair colors, and I like his outfit. Both N and Gladion have green eyes, yes, but Gladion's seem really pretty, and N's just seem ordinary.
