Because a lot of people that I know seem to have gotten shinies really quickly.

I know, I found a shiny gulpin in a horde battle.
Yea I've heard that too. But then again, knowing my luck I guess I wouldn't find a shiny after 10 play throughs.
I found a shiny bunnelby when I was looking for riolu
It very well could be, because if I'm not mistaken, the chances of finding a shiny are 1 out of 8192 of each Pokemon encounters. If you can see 5 wild Pokemon at a time, so if that aspect the shiny rate would go down 80%.
I very much believe the horde encounter explanation is correct.
A theory states that giving tips raises your chance
^Yea, but I haven't seen that anywhere else apart from tumblr, which is the equivalent of getting information from the drunk at the pub.
Gamefaq as well, but you're right, it's just a theory, as well as nearly everything on this topic atm
Tumblr is knowledge. Don't deny that. And seriously, then this game is good for shiny hunting, which I like doing.
There's true and false knowledge, and from experience, tumblr is mostly the latter...
I heard that it got raised to 1/1000, but I forgot where I saw that and I am not sure it is true.
Also, ShinyInfernape, how did you get 80%? I tried to see how much the rate would be for seeing 5 at a time was, and I got about .06% for there being at least one shiny in a group of five randomly encountered pokemon.
I like how we don't even know the base stats for certain yet we're already guessing a shiny encounter rate. XD
5 encounters with a 1/8192 chance each would be a roughly 5/8192 chance of a shiny (each encounter is its own independent chance).   So a *slightly* better chance than using the Masuda method.
I believe what ShinyInfernape is saying is the shiny rate would be five times as likely.  Still rare, but a bit better chance.
Fullmetal, what i said was 5/8192. 20% is way too high of a chance for at least one shiny to appear in a group of 5.
Reading what everyone posted I am thinking everyone is just mistaking what was said. In x and y you have the same 1/8192 chance to get a shiny but with a horde battle you have a 5/8192 chance. With that being said that 20% is and increase present to get one not just a flat you will get one 20% of the time.
On top of whats been said, chain fishing with your first Pokemon in your list having "suction cups" yields a very high chance of a fish shiny.

The horde battle analogy is correct, I've never seen any shinines in any of the previous games until X, seen a fair few now.
Yes I have wondered why They get a shiny in X and Y so quickly.... I do believe  the rate is 1/1000 I have heard that a couple of times on the internet. Also it makes  sense cause there was a page before X and Y came out having just more facts... One of them was "it will be easier to get shinys, and they will look more unique".
Can't be sure, but I found two shinies yesterday. One hatched Goomy(Masuda), and a horde Foongus. The only other "natural" shiny I've found in *many* playthroughs was a Tentacruel in HG. Came to ask the same question, and it'll be nice to get this confirmed.
probly  its the same as  any other Pokemon game.
Well there are just more ways in X and Y. You got the chaining, chain fishing, breeding (musada method), hordes and the friend safari. Which makes it just so much easier because of the 3 select pokemon and seen the increased (so they say) shiny rate.

What I am saying is that it might not be a higher shiny encounter rate in this game. But just more ways of obtaining a shiny pokemon.
How are you all so lucky!?!? The only shinies I've seen are the ones that are there guarantied...
The chances are still the same Mewderator, but those chances can be improved signifigantly if you chain the poke reader, chain fish, or breed via masuda method. Other than that they are still the same. And I don't have a shiny Pokemon either, if that helps.

Yay Serebii updated
>As of Pokémon X & Y, it is a 1 in 4,096 chance of finding a shiny Pokémon.

And you can use all the other methods to increase on that. No idea what the chances are for that though.

Fun fact - it's literally half of the previous rate.
Also worth mentioning that one in four thousand is still UGH TOO RARE. >.>
I'll be happy when the number is 1/2048. ;-;
