How is new Pokemon information discovered?

Movepools, stats, etc. Does GameFreak release this information at some point, or do people actually need to go through the game and work everything out?

Game Freak eventually releases this information. Pokemon X and Y are still too new for information and if this was released right now, it wouldn't make the game interesting. You also need to work some stuff out for yourself though.

For previous games, the data was extracted directly from the game. However, X&Y have not been hacked yet so this is currently not possible.

So we are all doing it the old-fashioned way! By just playing the game and noting down everything like Pokemon, what levels they learn moves and so on. I'm actually collaborating with the owners of some other Pokemon fan sites to collect this data.
