I remember vaguely that in some games, running away from a trainer battle costs you a turn.

Can you list in which games that happens and in which games it doesn't?

Asked this out of curiosity, if it stays unanswered for too long, I will hide it.

Great question, I was searching but didn't find nothing..
I'm pretty sure it only costs a turn from around DPPT and before. But I'm not 100% sure.
No, XY doesn't cost you a turn, I'm pretty sure.
^ Same goes for Fire Red and Leaf Green (probably gen 3 in general), im playing through them right now and tested this, it only tells you "you can't run from a trainer battle" and then lets you pick a move.
For Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, there's no running from a boss battle, and moving a tile costs you a turn, so running technically costs you a turn
Considering our family have all the main series games from Gen III, I can answer this if you wish.
But the Gen I and Gen II cartridges we have are dead. T_T
You can test those with an Emulator, no one has to know e_e
Emulators are haaaaaaard thoooooooough. D:
Seriously though I have no idea how to download the old Game Boy emulators. :l
Wot. Just google it.
It doesn't cost you a turn in any games. Just ran a few emulator tests except for gen V and VI.
Hope I helped!

Actually I think I misread your answer and converted it. Well crap.
idk if it's right or not tbh. Someone double check.
I'm just going to throw this out there, like I did the other day on PS! chat.

It's possible that it's based on your speed opposed to theirs. If you're Pokemon's slower, then it forces a turn, but if it's fairly quick, then it won't.

Just speculation. I remember that if I pressed run with my Infernape on Diamond then nothing would happen and I could re-select. But if I tried it with my Machoke then often I couldn't re-select
I mean, you can test it with a slow Pokemon and answer if you want...

Well it doesn't in Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver or Crystal, it just brings up the message "No! There's no running from a trainer battle!" and lets you select something else.

It also doesn't in Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald, it just brings up the message "No! There's no running from a TRAINER battle!" and lets you select something else.

It doesn't in Platinum, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Black, White, Black 2, White 2, X or Y either, it just brings up the message "No! There's no running from a Trainer battle!" and lets you select something else.

So unless it does it in Fire Red, Leaf Green, Diamond or Pearl, it doesn't do it at all. By the way I'm unable to test these out due to not having the actually games, so if someone wants to test them out to add to this answer feel free.

I also tested this theory out in some of the games I tested above and the results were the same.

It applies on all games then
What does?

On every game I've tested on no game does it cost you a turn trying to run from a trainer, however I still haven't tested Emerald, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Diamond or Pearl.
I've done the rest of all that, there were more who were trying sir dan xD
*Reasons for edit*

 - Managed to get a copy of Pokémon Emerald.
 - Tested PX's (Graveyard Shift) theory.

It doesn't cost you a turn in any game except gen IV. Just ran a few emulator tests except for gen V and VI because I have those games.
Hope I helped!

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure it costs you a turn in Gen IV in Diamond and Pearl and/or Platinum.
Could you just confirm this?
