Why did I get the Oval Charm?

Question

I just got all of the Pokemon I have seen in the hoenn pokedex on OR, however, I have not seen Jirachi or obtained it, I wanted to see what Prof. Birch would say, so I flew to Littleroot, talked to him and he gave me the oval charm. Is this because I haven't seen or obtained Jirachi, so Prof. Birch doesn't know about it? Is it because it is a legendary Pokemon and he doesn't know about it? Or is this a glitch? (However I'm not complaining)

You don't need Jirachi

Event Pokemon are not needed to fulfil any Dex

WHAT!!! I SPENT SO MUCH TIME TRYING TO GET THE EVENT POKEMON FOR MY NATIONAL DEX... T.T

... well at least they're good for trading
