PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

When I was reading through about Parasect, this one Pokedex entry in Ultra Sun said that "the bug is mostly dead, with the mushroom on it back". Honestly, that throws me off. In other words, is Parasect a living Pokemon? Or am I seeing something different? (Besides the game and the anime)

No. It's possessed by the Mushroom on it's back. So it's basically a Zombie.

The large mushroom on its back controls it. It often fights over territory with Shiinotic.

A mushroom grown larger than the host’s body controls Parasect. It scatters poisonous spores.

Source: Pokémon DB itself.

So Paras dies and then evolves into an undead Parasect under the effect of shrooms?

That's rich.
I'm pretty sure "dead" usually refers to having the brain completely dysfunctional. In Parasect's case, the brain is still controlling the Parasects movements, though the brain in turn is being controlled by the mushroom. Since the brain is still working in a way, I don't think Parasect would be considered technically dead.
His body is now an extension of the mushroom's body. in other words, it's devoured its life-force.
I've should've named it zombie
There's actually a parascect in super mystery dungeon that says "I, the mushroom, now have full control."
^  That's so cool! I didn't know that!
Replacing the word "Cool" with "Creepy" would make this comment more accurate
BTW, the parascect found in SMD is found on the wind continent. It mentions as a paras, as does fellow mushroom pokemon brelloom, that it likes the wind continent because it helps spread its spores. so we can expect a parasect-mushroom zombie apocalypse in the next mystery dungeon game.
We gotta protect our little poke brains!
Fool. resistance is futile. I, the mushroom, now of full control! Bwa ha ha!
^ Eww! I hate you. I'm moving to Europe!
Don't trust the fungus! Remember that and we should be okay.
Fool! wherever you go, wherever you hide, whoever you may trust or mistrust, you will soon be a slave of the mushroom lord! Mwa, ha ha!

Although it only takes one fire type to obliterate this growing empire
^ There are birds everywhere in every continent.
