I think this question has already been asked. https://pokemondb.net/pokebase/313988/
That isn't close enough for me to regard as a duplicate. We're going by the answer to the question, not the question itself doing that.

No, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are not sequels. :P

Sequel's Definition:

a published, broadcast, or recorded work that continues the story or develops the theme of an earlier one.

or

something that takes place after or as a result of an earlier event.

And we know that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon don't continue from Sun/Moon's story:

Pokémon Ultra Sun (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ウルトラサン Pocket Monsters Ultra Sun) and Pokémon Ultra Moon (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ウルトラムーン Pocket Monsters Ultra Moon) are the second paired versions of Generation VII and feature an alternate storyline from Pokémon Sun and Moon.

but the pokemon definition of a sequel is a continuation of one generation onto more advanced games, while a remake is a rebuilt version of a classic game as part of a thurther generation. like this: lilipup is in ORAS, and is a pokemon new to hoen, but is not gen 3, because it's a remake. poiple, stakataka and blaceaphron are new pokemon to alola in USUM, but are still gen 7 pokemon.

TL;DR: the pokemon definition of a sequel, is a remake from the same generation. (not the best description; there are other things.)

Emerald, Platinum, and Ultra Sun/Moon are definitely remakes. They introduce new things, take place in different universes, and are better than their prior games, even if it is in the same generation. It doesn't have to be a classic to be remade; it just has to exist. B2W2 is a sequel because it takes place in the same timeline as BW. It isn't really a sequel when it takes place in an alternate version of a story in an alternate timeline-because it isn't continuing anything, just retelling as similar, remade story. :P
noooooooooooo, we are looking at the POKEMON Exclusive DEFINITION. A SEQUEL IN POKEMON IS WHAT ALL THE THIRD GAMES ARE: REMAKES FROM THE SAME GENERATION.
also, by that logic, the sun and moon anime doesnt count as a sequel. and majoras mask doesnt either because its in a different timeline. ditto link to the past and wind waker.

How is it a sequel, exactly? Sequels are continuations, while US/UM don't continue from S/M's story-line. :P
Not necessarily. That is the general definition of a sequel, applicable for movies and so. In the Pokemon games,  it is simply the same game made a short while later, but with a slight twist in the plot. As in emerald (both teams,  Wallace),  B2W2 (White and Black Kyurem, Iris), USUM (Ultra Necrozma, different Ultra beast mechanism, elite four, Hau instead of Kukui).
