Is Thunder Punch Alakazam better than Ampharos in Gold/Silver?

Not really. Alakazam has the superior Special Attack, but it doesn't gain STAB from Thunder Punch like Ampharos does. But why bother using it on either? Use Thunderbolt instead. If you're not willing to breed a Mareep with Thunderbolt, Thunder also works on Ampharos. Don't use Thunder Punch on Alakazam, and only use it on Ampharos if you don't want to use Thunderbolt or Thunder.
