Well, iirc, in gens 1-5, crits would always deal double the damage that a normal attack deals. So, it was changed to 0.5 or smth idk, I don't remember.

This is a calculation with a guaranteed critical hit. As you can see, this has a variance in the percentages (65.9 - 78.1%). This means that yes, it does vary.
