This is definitely a very dumb question, but I honestly couldn't find a straight answer to my specific question anywhere, so sorry about that.
To better explain, you can do far more damage than necessary to kill a Pokemon, so is recoil based on that damage or on the damage ACTUALLY done, AKA, if the opponent is full health, 300, is the recoil based on that 300?

Recoil damage is based on how much you deal to the enemy. So if say a flare blitz roasts a Ferrothorn that has 420 hp,  then you are gonna take 140 recoil damage even if the calcs say you are gonna do 690 damage or something

Yes, recoil is maxed out at the opponent's HP. If we had a Blaziken at 300 HP and we used a super effective Brave Bird (which would do more than KO it), we would only take 99 recoil Damage (1/3 of the damage dealt is the recoil for Brave Bird).

I thought brave bird does 1/3 recoil.
