The official competitive format is called 'vgc' or video game championships and the thing is divided into series which runs in a period of time. Each series comes with its own set of rules and series thirteen is the current series which will last until october thirty one of this year. Its rules are as follows

Singles Ruleset

Pokémon Restrictions: Available National Pokédex, (if they have Galar Mark or Battle Ready Mark
Pokémon Limits: Team of 3 to 6 Pokémon from Level 1 to Level 100. All Pokémon then set to Level 50
Battle Time: 20 Minutes
Your Time: 7 Minutes
Team Preview: 90 Seconds
Turn Time: 45 Seconds

Doubles Ruleset

Pokémon Restrictions: Available National Pokédex, (if they have Galar Mark or Battle Ready Mark
Pokémon Limits: Team of 4 to 6 Pokémon from Level 1 to Level 100. All Pokémon then set to Level 50
Battle Time: 20 Minutes
Your Time: 7 Minutes
Team Preview: 90 Seconds
Turn Time: 45 Seconds

Also, I'm not gonna include this because I don't own a switch but I think this is also that ranked battle stuff on the actual game cartridge
What are the rules for restricted Pokemon? Are they completely banned this time?
Series 13 is a completely open format, with no restrictions on the number of restricted Legendaries on a team and even allowing Mythicals, a first for VGC.
Does the series number start at 0 for every generation?
