Is Smogon the same or different than Pokemon Showdown?

If it is different, how? I've seen a lot of references to both, but not sure what Smogon is.

Smogon is a website that's used by a lot of competitive Pokemon players. The website has several things, like analyses for most Pokemon, as well as forums. Most of those players don't like playing with real Pokemon games for several different reasons, so they use Showdown! to simulate their Pokemon battles and run their suspect tests and tournaments.

Showdown is Smogon's official battle simulator. It isn't "owned" by Smogon. They're both separate entities.

According to this Bulbapedia article, Smogon adopted Pokemon Showdown in July of 2012. This means that Smogon and Pokemon Showdown are not technically the same thing.

Edit: I have been informed that Smogon does NOT actually own showdown. My apologizes for the misinformation. They are still separate entities, however.

Smogon does not own Showdown in any capacity. They are separate, as much as they are often coupled together.
