PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

Hi, so my friend and I battle quite a lot in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, and try to improve off one another's teams. But the thing is, he recently came up with a Doubles strategy that I cannot beat no matter what I do. He uses Chansey and Volcarona to sweep my team. Since we're good friends and battle often, I have the details on the sets he uses, which I'll show below (with permission) for reference.

Chansey @ Eviolite
Tera Type: Dark
Ability: Healer
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Sp. Def
Nature: Bold
-Heal Pulse
-Life Dew
-Defense Curl
-Focus Blast

Volcarona @ Leftovers
Tera Type: Electric
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Nature: Bold
-Quiver Dance
-Fiery Dance
-Bug Buzz
-Giga Drain

So, the first issue here is that Volcarona has solid HP/Defense, so I cannot break through it Physically before the Chansey can use Life Dew/Heal Pulse; that plus the Flame Body ability and Leftovers makes my physical attackers unable to do much to it. If I bring Rock-Type moves for the 4x weakness, he Teras to Electric, and he has Giga Drain to deal with Rock-Types anyways. Without the STAB boost, my Rock moves don't deal enough anyways, and with them, it can use Giga Drain (same with Ground when he Teras). Also, he can use Quiver Dance multiple times with me hardly making a scratch, making him faster than anything and able to OHKO my entire team, and on top of all that he gets Sp. Defense boosted to be invincible that way as well.

Then we have the Chansey, which is ingeniously built with counterintuitive physical bulk, meaning I cannot OHKO (or even 2HKO) it, even with powerful Fighting-Type moves. This means that when it uses Life Dew to heal Volcarona, it heals itself as well. If I have a Knock Off user to remove the Eviolite, he will use Defense Curl to essentially put the Eviolite back on, and if I use Taunt, it uses Focus Blast. A Taunt strategy is the closest I can get, since Focus Blast is only 70 accuracy, and that negates most of Chansey’s use, but even when I do this, it means I’m so focused on the Chansey that Volcarona can get a Quiver Dance in, allowing it to sweep my team.

So in short, when I focus on Volcarona, Chansey just heals it up; when I focus on Chansey, Volcarona sets up for the sweep; and when I divide my focus, nothing happens. The only strategy that has beaten him online has been a Rapid-Strike Urshifu (with Tailwind active), which can OHKO Volcarona (technically 3 hits, but one move in Surging Strikes) even with one Quiver Dance in, but I don’t have Urshifu and don’t like using legendaries anyways.

Any suggestions for a hard or even soft counter?

Specially defensive Unaware Skeledirge or Clodsire will do well against Volcarona, while Taunt Great Tusk can destroy Chansey, even with the Def investment.

252 Atk Tera Fighting Great Tusk Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 700-824 (99.4 - 117%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
Are you playing VGC or some other format? 4v4 or 6v6? Are there any Pokemon, moves, or abilities that you're not allowed to use?
@Hallucinogens Thanks! I actually have an Unaware Skeledirge, but it is physically defensive for other reasons, so I think adding Clodsire to the team will work well against Volcarona; I had always overlooked that one as a random variant (like Wugtrio and Teodscruel), but it turns out it has some use after all.

I'm a bit confused about the Great Tusk build; why would I need Taunt if I can OHKO Chansey?
@sumwun I'm not competitive enough yet to know the rules of specific formats (working on that soon), but here are the usual rules I play by with my friend:
-6vs6
-No Pokemon with a Base Stat Total above 600
-No Sleep-inducing moves (e.g. Spore)
-No OHKO moves (e.g. Fissure)
I'm sure that's not quite like anything official, but we have fun with it and find it pretty balanced overall.
Since its 6v6, you probably wouldn't want to needlessly waste your Tera. So, you can Taunt first turn, then Close Combat, which will be a 2HKO without Tera Fighting. You'll also easily survive an uninvested Focus Blast:

0 SpA Chansey Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Great Tusk: 65-77 (17.5 - 20.7%) -- possible 5HKO
That makes sense for the Chansey (and I was worried about wasting my Tera), but what about Volcarona? Volcarona is faster, so it will use Giga Drain to take Great Tusk below 50% HP, then Great Tusk uses Taunt. The next turn, Volcarona uses Giga Drain to finish off Great Tusk, and Chansey is left at 100% HP. I do have the Clodsire as my other theoretical member, but even though it can tank attacks from Volcarona if need be, what can it actually do to it?
You could consider Booster Energy to make Tusk faster than Volc. Clodsire can just Toxic + Recover stall, along with maybe a Curse and Earthquake/Gunk Shot.
I'll want to test to make sure first, but I think that will work; thanks again.

The quiver dance set basically needs to carry protect in doubles, to prevent it from being double targeted to keep it alive, and to prevent it from being vulnerable to things like priority moves & fake out. This leaves it with only two attacking moves - generally heat wave plus either giga drain, bug buzz, or Tera blast. If it’s heat wave + giga drain or bug buzz, it is then walled by other fire Pokemon, such as Heatran & Volcanion. If it’s heat wave + Tera blast (with like Tera ground to hit Heatran & Volcanion), then it loses to water types. Basically, Volcarona is always walled by something.

Because those movesets for Chansey and Volcarona seem vulnerable to fire Pokemon, taunt, and double targeting, these movesets should help you check them. Please tell me if they don't really work.
