PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

This is something I have been wondering for a very long time. I have no idea why its always the female cards that are so expensive. An example is in the SWSH base set with Rainbow Rare Snorlax VMAX #206, and the Marnie Full Art #200. These are the two most expensive cards of the expansion, and I thought it would be pretty obvious that Snorlax would be more expensive, its a rainbow rare, a VMAX, and a very popular Pokémon. So its more expensive, right?

WHAT?!
Marnie is almost worth quadruple the money, how does that even make any sense? Are the prices based off community choices? Is it for character popularity? Is it for sexist reasons? Someone please explain to me.

Underaged waifus are the closest a lot of neckbeards will ever get to a real girlfriend. Known in some TCG communities as the "waifu tax".

We're experiencing a waifu boom currently -- in other words, the female full arts are rising to some of their highest ever prices. And please kill me if I ever have to say the words "waifu boom" again.

I like to think I'm somewhat knowledgeable about PTCG prices and reasonings, so I might make a more in-depth answer later.
Amethyst so some middle aged losers are just attracted to anime girls?
well..
That's part of it, yeah. There are some people that just genuinely enjoy the artwork though. Also some of them, like Iono, are relevant in competitive play, which would bump prices up a little. I'm no expert on the TCG meta though, more so the collecting aspect.
it could just also be because Marnie is one of the more popular SWSH characters (mainly due to her theme lmao), but that may be stretching it
Inflation, how old they are and rarity are a few possibilities but I could be wrong as I'm no expert (Hope this helps)

If you'd like the less depraved answer, some of the "waifu" cards (as they are known in the community) are meta picks. The most notable example off the top of my head is Iono in the rotations it's legal, but there's others out there. Some people are willing to spend more to get a card they need for their deck.

If you'd like to lose faith in your fellow man, I encourage you to continue reading.

The driving force behind many waifu cards' high prices is their attractiveness. Many of the people that collect cards are chronically online neckbeards that scour every corner of the earth for an Evolving Skies pack and post their find to Reddit while furiously performing price calculations with their Dorito-stained fingers. Shockingly, these absolute catches can't seem to find a girlfriend in real life, so they've resorted to lusting over the only women that they can pretend will give them a modicum of attention.

Perhaps it would dishearten you further to learn that the most expensive waifu cards are those with the clearly underage girls on them. Do with this information as you will.

If you have a less jaded view of waifu collectors than me, you could say that they just like the artwork. Spend any amount of time trawling through Pokemon card collection forums, however, and you'll probably become just as cynical as me.
