it's a ghost I think
I don’t think this has a definitive answer except we don’t know(at least until Game Freak identifies Clauncher’s natural predators).

The Lingering Pokemon, according to the Pokedex anyways...

For a more serious answer, it's not really known exactly what species ancient Dreepy was. The closest we can get in game is its Pokedex entries, specifically the Sword and Violet ones:

After being reborn as a ghost Pokémon, Dreepy wanders the areas it used to inhabit back when it was alive in prehistoric seas.
-Sword

It has a habit of biting at Clauncher even though it doesn’t feed on them. This is said to be vestigial behavior from when Dreepy was alive.
-Violet

The dex entries mention Dreepy living in prehistoric seas and it bites Clauncher as a vestigial behavior from when it was alive, but this still doesn't give us much insight on its species, except that it was an aquatic creature.

Bulbapedia states:

Dreepy seems to be a combination of an undead prehistoric amphibian, the Diplocaulus, and a dart or missile. The Dragon type may be a reference to the Olm, a type of salamander native to central and southeastern Europe that was believed to be a dragon offspring by locals.

It's likely that a prehistoric Dreepy would more closely resemble one of if not both of these creatures, as well as being not dead. But unless we get more info on Dreepy's origin by the Pokémon Company or in the games, Dreepy's prehistoric characteristics fall unto speculation.

Or maybe we'll get a Past Paradox form of Dreepy that is literally just a wooden dart who knows?

Hope this helped.

Sadly, I don't think it has ever been confirmed what Dreepy was before becoming a ghost. All we really know is that it lived in ancient seas and that biting Clauncher was a vestigial behavior, as showed in some pokedex entries:

-Sword ''After being reborn as a ghost Pokémon, Dreepy wanders the areas it used to inhabit back when it was alive in prehistoric seas.''
-Violet ''It has a habit of biting at Clauncher even though it doesn’t feed on them. This is said to be vestigial behavior from when Dreepy was alive.''

Also this is my first real answer to a question in Pokemondb.net so don't judge me please :)

i think dreepy used to be an anorith. Reasons:

  • dreepy likes flying at high speeds, which would have been comfortable for a creature used to swimming quickly.
  • clauncher shoots down flying prey, and it is stated a lot that anorith has 'wings'. this might annoy anorith enough to make it bite clauncher as a ghost.
  • dreepy kinda loks like anorith, and drakloak kinda looks like armaldo. ok, they only look similar if you try I guess

this is my first answrer so dont judge! I probably missed some stuff. all information from Pokemondb :)

First of all, this doesn't even really answer the question, in which "animal" is probably asking for what real world animal it's based on. The similarities between Anorith and Dreepy are a stretch at best, the only real similarities being that they look similar, and even then that's limited to the fact that they float, have little hand/claw things that hang down, and have red feather type things protruding from the sides of their bodies. It's directly stated in Anorith Pokedex entries that it's an ancestor of bug Pokemon, which Dreepy is not. It's also directly started in Dreepy Pokedex entries that it's likely Dreepy attempts to eat Clauncher because it fed on them when it was alive

Evidence supporting this is anecdotal at best.
