Like how?! Shiny hunters somehow know the exact number of soft resets, even if it took thousands. I haven't done nearly that and I already lost track!
Trackers are easily available online (such as this simple one). It can be difficult to remember to increase the counter every time you reset, but that's the most efficient way of doing it. You don't really need a tracker unless you want to get mad at your terrible RNG. :P
