Now that magmortar is in sword and shield, I thought I would put my set up
Magmortar @ Assault Vest
Role: bulky mixed sweeper
Lonely Nature
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 252 S.Def/124 Atk/124 S. Atk/4 HP
Mach Punch/Cross Chop
Thunderbolt
Fire Blast
Scorching Sands
Here are the reasons for running each move:
Hear me out on Mach Punch: I use this guy in doubles (late game in battle tower/galarian star tournament) and I use Mach Punch to clean up on low-hp opponents after one of my other mons has gone down.
If you don’t want to bring him late game then cross chop is a better option and is there for crits and better damage then Mach Punch.
It is honestly up to you
Thunderbolt: it’s a strong special electric move that has a chance to paralyze, and it can also hit water types. If you aren’t running flare blitz (physical fire move) then if you want two physical moves on your mixed set, go ahead and run thunder punch. The damage output won’t be as good, but you can run it if you want to
Scorching Sands: it’s a special ground type move that has a chance to burn the opponent. this is a good move to run for a couple reasons:
The chance to burn the opponent. Due to magmortar’s poor physical defense, it will take a lot of damage from any strong physical move. If you can score a burn on the opponent, then magmortar will stay around longer against strong physical attackers like Mamoswine, metagross, rillaboom, etc.
Magmortar does not get access to earth power, and this is a nice coverage move to hit those Pokémon it can’t hit with cross chop, it’s fire move or thunderbolt (like turtanator/duraldon)
Okay, so the fire move is up to you.
I’ll give a good reason for each one that I thought of
Flamethrower: high base power, chance to burn. This is a good option, because of STAB obviously, and the chance to burn helps (same thing as schorching sands)
Heat Wave: Hits both opposing Pokémon in doubles, chance to burn, 5 higher base power than flamethrower, but 10% less accurate
This is a really good option. In doubles this is nice because of hitting both and the burn chance (said with scorching sands) but it is only 90% accurate.
Fire Blast: 115 base power, burn chance, and 15% less accurate than flamethrower. This is also a good option. It is powerful, and the burn chance is good. It is a little less accurate then flamethrower and heat wave, which might be a problem.
Fire Punch: Physical Move, 75 base power and burn chance. I had this for a little while, but then I noticed the lack-luster damage output. Yes, it can burn the opponent, but it’s only a 10% chance. If fire punch has a low damage output, you are most likely you will go down before you can knock out the opponent
Flare Blitz: This is a nice option. (I wanted to use this but I went with fire punch because my watt traders hadn’t changed in days, until I later swapped it out for Heat Wave) high base power (120 if I am remember correctly) and it’s 100 percent accurate like flamethrower, and there is a small chance of a burn. There is the recoil damage though. I feel like this is the strongest physical fire move that you can use on this set, if you want to use a physical fire move, and you’re willing to take a bit of recoil move each time you use it.
Lava Plume: Not really as viable as the rest of my suggestions. You can run it if you want, but it really isn’t that good
Flame Wheel: Only 65 base power with a burn chance. It is just a weaker fire punch or flamethrower. Don’t run it unless you really want to its not that viable at all
Overheat: You could argue for this being good. Amazing base power, same accuracy as Heat Wave. However, there is a -2 in special attack every time you land this move . This could be validated because this is a mixed set, and if you need to use your STAB special fire move you can just swap out and swap back in.
Those are the reasons I have for each move, and I hope you guys like my set!!! If you have any questions about this set, just leave a comment.
