The character limits are there to prevent excessive space use on the site, and generally to prevent large spam blocks.
Honestly though, this site isn't really good for hosting stories, so if you want to do that, consider making your own blog, setting up a deviantart account, using textupload, or pretty much any other major hosting site. They'll do a much better job for formatting as well.
