Points act as a reputation system on the Q&A, rewarding you for making good contributions to the website. They also allow you to get extra privileges, such as voting. Below is a guide to all the ways you can gain (or lose) points:

  • All users receive +20 points for creating an account. Think of it like a sign-up bonus! (This is given in all three sections.)
  • If your question or answer is up-voted, you'll receive +10 points.
  • If your question or answer is down-voted, you'll be penalised −10 points.
  • Having your answer selected as the best awards you +20 points, unless you were also the author of the question.
  • For every question you have with a 'best answer' selected, you receive +2 points.
  • For down-voting a post, you will get −2 points. (This helps discourage unmeaningful and excessive down-voting.)

The system above is the same on every section of the site. Some of its deeper intricacies are as follows:

  • You can gain a maximum of 200 points from up-votes on one post. If your post receives a 21st up-vote or more, you won't receive any additional points from it.
  • You can lose a maximum of 40 points from down-votes on one post. If your post receives a 5th down-vote or more, you won't lose additional points from it.
  • If somebody removes their vote or de-selects the 'best answer' from a post, then all the points involved in that exchange will be removed.
  • Any points gained or lost on a post are retained if it is hidden, unless it was a ‘best answer’; in that case, both the +20 points and +2 points are foregone.
  • Hidden posts with no dependent posts beneath them are deleted periodically by the site admin, in which case all point changes involving those posts are cleared with them.
  • Users receive +2 points for selecting the BA on their question even if a moderator did it for them.

To view your points total, go to your profile page and look under the ‘Activity by...’ heading. You can access your profile page by clicking your username — a link can always be found inside the yellow navigation bar.

Please note that your points total is different for each section, so any score you earn on the main section is not transferable to Meta or RMT, and vice versa. (This can create the illusion that your points total and privileges are changing for no reason — rest assured this is normal!)

As mentioned, it is possible to gain extra privileges using points. We recommend reading the list of privileges and required points. It will explain the extra powers you can get with points, such as the ability to vote and create tags.

Stop doing that =='
Okay I get it.
You`re cool pokemaster. ;)
You sure are...
You are the boss pokemaster, I want to be moderator some day! But I know that's not easy, so I'm going to work hard!
thanks now i get it
I recently saw someone new with 0 points and no downvotes question or whatever. Have you stopped giving people the sign-up bonus?
No. Pokemaster is the Person who created this site. :P
by the way, they probably had 0 points because they down voted 5 answers.
Hang on, I just checked my points. i've lost all my points! why/what cuased this to happen?
@Tyrantrum: No, his concern is legitimate. Lots of people don't have the extra 20 points, even though they have no activity at all. And down voting 5 answers would leave you on 10 points anyway.
And you have not lost all of your points. Your total points are different for each section of the site. Your answers and points gained do not carry over from the main section to this section, for example. So if you just looked at your points in this section - where you have not posted much - then your amount of points is normal. You still have 60 points on the main section:
pokemaster, i was just curious what would happen if someone had an answer, then got so many down votes that he/she would total less than 0 points so he/she would have -something points.
unless it acts like the pomeg berry glitch (and other core series glitches) where a  negative number = highest possible value eg 1,000,000points.
yours indubitably: loomhigh123555
People can have negative points. If you get downvoted enough, your points will start going into the negatives.
I just opened my account today and I didn't get 20 points):
Thank you! I was just asking a question on freeze-dry’s effectiveness on Pokémon and it said I needed 100 points to make the tag “freeze-dry”. But how do you check points?
You can check your points by viewing your account page — you can go to it by clicking your username anywhere on the site. I’ll add this to the answer, actually.
Be aware though, your points total is different for each section. You gain points the same way everywhere on the site, but points you earn here on Meta don’t contribute to your score on the main section, and vice versa.
Is upvoting/downvoting even possibe anymore? I havent been able to do either lately and its kind of irritating
Yes, it is possible to vote. You're unable to do so because you don't currently have the requisite 30 points in any section.
oh, thanks @Fizz this is a new account for me as i hadnt used db in a while
people cant control when people downvote why do you lose points for it
because if your post is downvoted, it's probably not a good question/answer?
Don't you gain points if you have an unanswered question for a while?
@Waluigi no. Most questions that go unanswered for a long while are more interesting, so people give them more upvotes.
Is it possible to get negative points? Like if you get downvoted and lose points. OwO cause I am not sure how it works.
@Baimber yes
