Why do people, when his/her/its Pokemon has a move that shares a type, ask if its STAB?

It's because they're not sure exactly how STAB works.

STAB=Same Type Attack Bonus

Multiply Power of move by 1.5 if its STAB
(Multiply by 2 instead of 1.5 if that Pokémon has Adaptability and its move is STAB)
