Is it possible for a Gyarados to become passive?

Question

We already know that this Pokemon is almost the epitome of total devastation and mayhem. (A little bit) But now, noticing the nature of each Gyarados, I'm curious, is there such thing as a passive, or possibly passive aggressive Gyarados?

In the games, it's definitely possible to have a Gyarados that's asleep, knows no attack moves, or has bad attack stats, if that's what you meant by "passive". I'm not sure about other media, though.

Depends what you mean by passive. In the anime, Misty trained a Gyarados that was hostile at first, but she was eventually able to bond with it. It made one tiny appearance in 3rd gen series. It used Flamethrower. I believe during the Whirl arc there was another trainer who used a Gyarados. If you mean passive as in gentle and timid, I'm not sure.

Passive is an interesting word. The games aren't really that suggestive of a Pokémon's demeanour, since anything obeys without question, mostly. The Bulbapedia entry states that the Pokémon is known for its vicious temperament and is often prone to violence, which is often the case in the anime. However, passive would imply more than just obedience, it would imply the Pokémon is friendly to its trainer and not prone to confrontation. There are Gyarados under ownership of many trainers, including Lance, Clair, and Wake, but given they are trained for combat, they are more assertive in their behaviour despite being tame.

This one, that evolved from an abnormally large Magikarp, looks like a good candidate, about as much affection as you could possibly see from the "atrocious Pokémon".
