It's based on petrified (or fossilized) wood, which, much like fossilized bones, is what happens after millions of years where old wood buried in the ground is replaced by rock over time, creating a rock that looks like the wood. This is also represented in its name, as the "sudo" in its name is pronounced like the prefix "pseudo-", meaning fake, making its name effectively mean "fake wood."

Also in the anime they say it acts like a grass type so water type pokemon think their attacks are ineffective and don't attack it.
Because of its rock type ppl will use fire,ice,poison,flying,or big all of which sudowoodo  resists
