Ok, I'm back in my Fire Red playthrough and something weird just happened. My Ivysaur used razor leaf on Lt surge's raichu. The first time it hit, it wasn't a critical hit and it did just over half. The next time it crit, and it barely got it into red hp and Ivysaur got KOed. Why did the critical hit do less than the normal hit?

what level is ivysaur?
27 now. I havent used it alot
Due to the random damage mechanic I think. It probably got high roll on the first one, but then got really low roll on the crit
I think that crits are fixed to damage 1.5. Did LT Surge use a Def Up?
it's almost definitely the random damage mechanic.
> Critical is applied starting in Generation II. It is 2 for a critical hit in Generations II-V, 1.5 for a critical hit from Generation VI onward, and 1 otherwise.

It should be 2 in Gen 3, so it must be impossible.
I haven't done the calcs but it seems very unlikely that a high roll did more damage than literally 2x damage. The highest rolls Vs the lowest rolls still only equate to a few percent either way.
I just calculated in damage calculator, it's basically impossible to happen. And you certainly didn't ev train right?
Did you heal after the first hit? I'm doing calculation and need to know

(LoL I can't believe it. It's possible )
Also only if you healed after 1st move of Ivysaur, this is possible because I'm using overgrow in my non crit move and no overgrow in crit.
Here are the calcs, don't be surprised.

Lvl 27 0- SpA Overgrow Ivysaur Razor Leaf vs. Lvl 24 0 HP / 0 SpD Raichu: 28-33 (40 - 47.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Lvl 27 0- SpA Ivysaur Razor Leaf vs. Lvl 24 0 HP / 0 SpD Raichu on a critical hit: 33-39 (47.1 - 55.7%) -- 73.8% chance to 2HKO

And another thing, in FRFG, I've noticed that the system shows that the Pokémon is in yellow health (which means that the Pokémon is in half health) although if you see properly it is nearly only 55% not 50%! (Just like many problems in red and blue, Nintendo was still improving Pokémon then, so it's ok) this is 1 way possible. Let's take 45% in over grow move and 47% in non over grow move( crit). Total =
100%- 92% = 8%. This gives raichu life.
Hope I helped!
Please confirm if you healed after 1st move because then only this is possible.

Both of those calcs are the same.
Oops 1 moment
But the critical hit is still doing more damage than the overgrow-boosted hit.
ok then then non crit is 48% and crit 47% total damage 95% it won't kill.
Im not sure but i think i may have healed.
Yh you can because Ivysaur might have been in KO range and you were sure you'll OHKO so might have healed

Probably first hit might have been Critical Hit, not the second, because:

Only if Ivysaur has max SpA and Raichu has least SpD, it is possible to hit more than 50%, which is impossible in-game.

Lvl 27 252+ SpA Ivysaur Razor Leaf vs. Lvl 24 0 HP / 0- SpD Raichu: 31-37 (44.2 - 52.8%) -- 22.7% chance to 2HKO

Normally, it would take four hits to KO Raichu (it is possible that Raichu is more EV trained than Ivysaur)

Lvl 27 0 SpA Ivysaur Razor Leaf vs. Lvl 24 0 HP / 0 SpD Raichu: 20-24 (28.5 - 34.2%) -- 1.8% chance to 3HKO

If it is a critical hit, it would be more than 50%.

0 SpA Ivysaur Razor Leaf vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Raichu on a critical hit: 122-144 (46.7 - 55.1%) -- 69.5% chance to 2HKO

Hope this helps :)

(Lt. Surge's Raichu's lvl is 24)

My first hit was a normal hit. I am 99.9% sure.
