How to open Pokemon sword/shield with the menu open?

Is it possible to open the menu screen of Pokemon Sword/Shield without the use of right controller? I've heard that it is possible to open the game with the menu screen on. Is this possible? Or is there any other way to open the menu with only the left controller?

You have to set your game to "casual mode" in the options menu, then you can use the arrow buttons on the left controller in place of the A, B, X, and Y buttons. If you do not already have your game in casual mode, you need the right controller to open the menu to select this option.
