I was looking for an Eevee in Route 10 Kalos and I encountered a Sigilyph, so I used my Braixen's Fire Spin to give some passive damaging before trying to take it out with Flame Charge.

But...the fiery vortex effect did not happen! The Sigilyph only took the active damage from the turn I used Fire Spin and the passive damage from the vortex effect never happened. This also happened one time when I was fighting a trainer's Slugma but since it was a fire-type, I assumed the vortex does not affect it - However Sigilyph, which clearly isn't a fire-type also didn't take this effect, so I wonder what happened.

Are you sure about Slugma not taking extra damage? The Sigilyph thing can be sufficiently explained by Magic Guard.

As sumwun and Emty said, magic guard prevents damage from non attacking sources. So the reason sigilyph didn't take damage from fire spin is because of magic Guard.

@ Emty yeah the Slugma really didn't but I'm not so concerned about it since "Oh, its a fire type, it would make sense if it doesn't take extra damage" but now that you mention it, are fire-types supposed to take the passive damage too?
What about the Slugma?
Yeah I think the slugma was immune cause it was a fire type. I don't know how fire spin worked and if fire types were immune, my first game was lge.
Definitely not immune due to it being fire-type. I don't really have an idea as to why it didn't take that trapping damage, we would need more info of the situation (a video of the Slugma would be helpful, but I don't think they have it).
Can you show us a screenshot or video of a Slugma getting hit by fire spin and not taking the passive damage?
The battle was from a while ago and since it was a regular random trainer battle, I unfortunately did not take any videos or images
It's more likely this is just misremembering than some obscure interaction with Fire Spin that nobody has written down before.

Well, probably the Sigilyph had the Magic Guard ability, wich gives immunity to any
passive damage, like poison, hazards, recoil and the damage from Fire Spin.

A previous answer said this also. However, do you have an explanation of what happened with Slugma?
