Why thank you, BM. It is canonically the character I played as in my playthrough of PLA and Violet, since he got sucked into a Space-Time Distortion to travel to Paldea. This is similarly how he traveled from Alola (presumably) to Hisui, by falling off of Solgaleo and getting sucked into an Ultra Wormhole.

Speaking of the companions, I thought of something cool regarding their peoples' names. You see, when one of them is born, he doesn't have an official name. He'll have a name, but it's more like a nickname because the parents need something to call their kid. He won't gain his official name until he's older. When they decide the time is right, his parents basically throw a party, although ceremony might be the official word. The young man's friends and other family are invited over, and sometimes the town... mayor... person, or whoever, comes as well to witness the event, though he leaves before people start stuffing their faces. Oh yes, there's food. But first, the father (or the mother if the father's dead or vanished or whatnot) basically declares that the young man has earned his new name and all that, and that's the name he will go by. But in a more exciting way than that. Then he and his pals can stuff their faces. These ceremonies are an important thing, and in the chance someone invited can't show up, it's put off until the gang can all arrive. Sometimes the ceremony is announced to the kid in advance, other times it's left a surprise. Kinda like a birthday party. But now that we've got the actual ceremony stuff out of the way, how do the names work?
As I said, they wait until the kid is older to give him his name. This is because the kid's interests, personality, and skills will be more developed by that time than at or shortly after birth. These are the factors the parents usually take into consideration when picking his official name. Here are the explanations for Riser, Gear, and Jumpy's names:
- I've mentioned that Riser likes swords, right? Well, when he decided to train his swordsmanship, he rose up the ranks quickly. He clearly had an affinity for it. His trainer or mentor or whatever was pretty impressed. Because of how quickly he rose up the ranks, his parents named him Riser.
- Gear's name has a little bit of a double-meaning. Its main reference is to his love of technology, which can contain gears. It also refers to how he often carries that kind of stuff around: it's his gear.
- Jumpy's name is a little misleading. He wasn't named Jumpy because he was easily startled. Instead, he was named Jumpy because of how he jumps around. His parents were well aware of how hyper he was, so what sounds more like a fond nickname became his official name.
Different people react to their new names differently. Some are excited and happy. Some prefer to be called by their old names. Some of them throw fits. Negative reactions are understandable, because suddenly your name's different and you might not want it to be. And while someone's old name might be used as a nickname among those he's close to, there are some parents who decide to have their kid keep his old name. While it's not like there's a law against this, it's not really a good thing. You see, people are usually named for their talents and such. To still have your old name as your official name is basically saying that you have no skills, no notable personality traits, and no interests. Still having your old name as an adult also implies this. While the cases are rare, those with their old names as their official names are usually treated as inferior by their more snarky colleagues. Some just don't care either way, but often the kid himself feels bad about it, because there's nothing he can do to change his parents' decision and now people will mock him for something that's out of his control. Sure, not everyone will know what his old name is, but I imagine you can tell the difference between old names and official names. I'm... not sure exactly how, though.
So yeah. Companion name lore.
