Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

Is the 10% chance to paralyze worth choosing thunderbolt over just thunder?
EVERYBODY NEEDS TO READ THIS: Mega Ampharos is the ultimate special sweeper in a trick room team. His special attack is high enough to OHKO everything and his ability let's nothing be immune to the godlike power of Ampharos. Seriously. Just use him in Trick Room. Or just run an agility set.
Have you ever heard of ground type pokemon?
Have you ever heard about Skill?

Thunderbolt: Good power, high accuracy, chance to paralyze, can attack Pokemon using Fly, STAB.

Power Gem: Decent power, high accuracy.

Light Screen: Raises Sp. Def, makes it more likely that the foe will decide to use a Physical attack, allowing Static to take effect.

Signal Beam: Decent power, high accuracy, chance to confuse.

(Originally posted by trachy in the question.)

I like this set. The only problem I have is the fact that as you said, Light Screen makes your opponent more inclined to use physical moves, I would teach Ampharos the move Reflect (Which it can learn through breeding). since its only weakness is ground (almost always physical) to cover it, and it has higher special defense anyway.

oh ok but that would be very useful if it could do that ^_^
I see. Originally, I didn't put any of the set in, and Pokemaster edited the moves in. Sorry about the context there, as it says "originally posted by Trachy."
only problem with that is, what about ground type moves? Lots of pokemon can learn earthquake, and that one OHKO him...
I have mine know Fire Punch. Is that okay?
What if you replaced Light Screen/Reflect with Magnet Rise to annoy the ground types? (Keeping all the special sweeping moves)

Ampharos (M) @ Leftovers

Role: Bulky Sweeper

Trait: Static

EVs: 120 Def / 252 SAtk / 136 Spd

Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

  • Agility
  • Thunderbolt
  • Hidden Power [Ice]
  • Power Gem

Enough Bulk to Take most neutral hits that haven't been +1'd or + 2'd.

And nice Sweeping stats.

Agility makes up for that Horrible speed, so he can actually sweep, Thunderbolt for hard hitting STAB, HP Ice for Ground coverage and for Dragons and Grass types.

And Power Gem for extra coverage.

Ampharos (M) @ Leftovers/Light Clay

Trait : Static

Role : Annoying Sweeper/ Raichu Wannabe :P

Moves :

  • Attract
  • Reflect/Light Screen
  • Magnet Rise
  • Thunderbolt

Attract + Static annoys your foes to death :P
Reflect/Light Screen for team support, or as Trachy said, Reflect for making Static work better, and support from Light Clay
Magnet Rise makes it immune to Ground-Type moves like Earthquake
Thunderbolt to attack what can be defeated :P

sorry but.. Ampharos is BETTER than Raichu :)...
Raichu wannabe? Change that right now >:/
Raichu wanna be? Who has better stats smart guy
can't hurt ground types

Ampharos (M) @ Ampharosite
Ability: Static
EVs: 172 HP / 252 SAtk / 84 Spd
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch
- Dragon Pulse
- Heal Bell
- Focus Blast

This r my set.
Can you replace @Ampharosite with something else?

Reflect: Good support move.

Heal Bell: Also a good support move.

Thunderbolt: STAB.

Hidden Power Ice: Deals with Grass and Ground types.

Hidden Power Grass can replace HP Ice to deal x4 damage to Water/Ground types. Focus Punch is also good to deal a large amount of damage, but is risky.

Generation 5

I call it the "Cockblock Toxic Staller

Ampharos (M) @ Leftovers

EV's 252 HP 252 SpD 4 Def

Cotton Guard

Cotton Spore

Light Screen

First turn set up the spore, then guard for +3 Def boost. The light screen, go for a toxic and spore for more speed loss.

I'd put at least one attacking move here. He's completely screwed against a steel type.
ik, but still you can switch out
lol. rly? The Cockblock Toxic staller? (Edit in crazy pun here)
i would say.........noobish it is not a good set cuz if u fight against ground types u will defenatly(don't know spelling)lose
It's a goddamn Ampharos. You wouldn't use it against ground types...
I'd put Thunderbolt on it, because of Taunt/Steel types.

My typical set up is this:

Ampharos (F) @ Leftovers

Ability: Static
Nature: Bold (+Def, -Atk)
EVs: 252 HP, 80 Def, 176 SpAtk

  • Thunderbolt (powerful reliable STAB)
  • Signal Beam (coverage)
  • Attract (female Ampharos as male opponents are slightly more likely in-game, also male is the default for PO)
  • Reflect or Magnet Rise (helps reduce or prevent Earthquake damage)

I used to use Power Gem but I found it barely covers more than Signal Beam and is lower power.

Here's a great sweeper moveset for Mega Ampharos.

enter image description here

Gen VI

Role: Mega-Sweeper

Ampharos (M) @ Ampharosite

Modest Nature (+SpAtk, -Atk) OR, you could go with Quiet Nature (+SpAtk, - Speed) if you want to set up a Trick Room team! ^.~

  • Focus Blast
  • Thunderbolt
  • Dragon Pulse
  • Power Gem

Thunderbolt is STAB (obviously).

Dragon Pulse is also a STAB move (when Mega-Evolved), it adds extra coverage, and it'll get the jump on Pokemon like Garchomp, which seem abundant in Gen VI.

Focus Blast covers Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, and Steel types. It isn't the most accurate move, but it's powerful. (Base SpAtk of 120) As such, it has proven it's usefulness by getting me out of many tight scrapes in the past. (Especially against bulky Ice types)

Finally, Power Gem covers Fire, Ice, Flying, and Bug types. It is also more effective over a wider range of opponents than Signal Beam due to the fact that bug type moves are not very effective against Fire, Fighting, Poison, Flying, Ghost, Steel, AND Fairy types. This makes the move fairly useless online if your up against a Pokemon that is a mix of/is any of these types. Thus, Power Gem is the better option. =D

You read my mind.

confuse ray/thunder wave

cotton gaurd
power gem: gets rid of the grass weakness

Grass isn't super effective against Ampharos

Quiet Nature
Static ability
158: def, 252: spa, 100: spd
Thunderbolt: God power, best overall electric type move. STAB as well
Power Gem: Unusual special based rock type move: Good power, good PP, great acc. Good type coverage.
Signal Beam: Good side effect, grass/dark/psychic type protection.
(Filler): HP Ice or Water, to deal with Ground types.
Fire Punch for type coverage. Bulldoze for again, type coverage.

ampharos is beast. Nobody else has mentioned this strategy, but I love it.
Item: metronome
ability: static

why anything else? STAB, 95 power, 100 accuracy?

-cotton guard
idk about black and white and lower, but in black2/white2
it raises defense by 4 levels.

-echoed voice
1. he has high sp. attack
2.metronome and move ability combo is killer!
3.good against all types in between of what he doesnt have.

-magnet rise
no weakness to ground

So basically, I think this is the best setup. Thunderbolt is reliable with STAB and if you need to use it twice it'll do more damage the second time. echoed voice will wipe them out with two or three hits, and with the metronome and echoed voice ability you can basically wipe out every Pokemon that won't tank him or is ghost. Cotton guard is just amazing. If you want something else, I would try hidden power (Ice) because cotton guard will protect you from ground and them wipe them with hidden power.

Also if you want to try confuse ray instead of magnet rise or hidden power you can, but that's not the best option.

Ampharos @ Ampharosite

Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Def / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Modest Nature
- Dragon Pulse
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave
- Hidden Power Ice/Focus Blast/Signal Beam

Ampharos finally has its time to shine! I have it as a slow, but hard-hitting bulky kind of Ampharos. It learns Dragon Pulse in this generation, which is a great STAB move. Thunderbolt there for STAB, coverage, etc... You just need it. Thunder wave because it has the bulk to be able to take a hit and is able to cripple the opponent to 25% speed and a chance to miss. HP Ice to cover its Ground weakness and for coverage, or Focus Blast for risky coverage, and Signal Beam if you want to cover Grass, Psychic and Dark types.

Role: Special Sweeper

Trait: Static

Electro Ball
Thunder Wave/Cotton Guard/Agility
Signal Beam
Power Gem

I would really recommend this set. Electro Ball has a BP of 150 when your opponent has 25% or less of Ampharos's speed. However, Ampharos is a somewhat slow Pokemon, so that's where t-wave comes in. Instantly halves the opponent's speed and you have a pretty OP electric attack. In-Game, there's really not a lot of super fast Pokemon used by trainers or gym leaders, so for me, Electro Ball = way more powerful than Thunderbolt OR thunder, and I used both to test it (pokemon white 2).

I you have mega ampharos I would put on:

dragon pulse(STAB)

power gem

signal beam

Bulky coverage set; set up with rain and/or trick room, or replace a move of your choice with rain dance or trick room

The Zap-o-tron himself

Static/Mold Breaker
Bold (+def -atk)
- Magnet Rise (to escape earthquake)
- Thunder (STAB, high power, sure hit with the rain)
- Dragon Pulse (STAB)
- Focus Blast (coverage)

Reflect to just reduce EQ damage is a big waste of both a turn and a moveset. There are better moves for it, because EQ is still gonna 2HKO even with Reflect up
I'll replace it with magnet rize then.
252+ Atk Huge Power Mega Mawile Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mega Ampharos: 534-630 (139 - 164%) -- guaranteed OHKO One of the most common things and Without swords Dance
Thanks for all the improvements everyone's giving me!

Role: Agility Sweeper
Ability: Static ---> Mold Breaker
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Sp. Atk / 252 Speed
Modest Nature (+Sp. Atk, - Atk)

  • Thunder / Thunderbolt / Discharge
  • Dragon Pulse
  • Focus Blast
  • Agility

With access to Agility, which can boost its abysmal speed, M-Ampharos can successfully utilize an Agility Sweeper set.

Thunder is good STAB, but has low accuracy. Thunderbolt can be used as a safer option because it has a higher accuracy. Discharge, on the other hand, gets a higher chance of Paralysis (which may suit better on defensively-oriented teams).

Dragon Pulse gets good STAB and decent neutral coverage. It also deals with Dragon-types.

Focus Blast gets coverage against Rock-types and Steel-types that would otherwise wall this set.

Agility is the main move of this set. It boosts its speed and can outspeed a lot of offensive threats. Note that it still isn't faster than Scarfed Garchomp, which is one of its main threats.

You should set-up Agility as soon as Ampharos is on the field. If you switch-in on a Pokemon that Ampharos clearly threatens, it'll switch-out, granting you a free turn to set-up.
