PokéBase - Pokémon Q&A

I'm playing Platinum for the first time in my life now, and I have no idea who should I make my flying type. Innitially, I built my team with Togetic as my flying type, but I just now discovered that you can only get one Shiny Stone before the 8th gym, and I'm also using a Roselia on my team and want to evolve her, and using a Togetic with no attacking moves all up until Candice would be super painful and not fun. And about Staraptor and Drifblim, I find Staraptor incredibly boring and overrated, and I just don't want to use it, I don't find the Pokemon fun. And I already used Drifblim when I played Pearl a few years back, and I don't want to repeat Pokemon. I might end up using a Drifblim if I find nothing else (I looked through the appendix walkthrough and I can't seem to find any actually useful flying types) but I would still love to know your opinions and experiences.

Besides Staraptor, I think the best flying Pokemon in Pt are Gliscor, Gyarados, Scyther, and maybe also Crobat.
They're probably looking for a fly pokemon, so I wouldn't recommend gliscor, gyarados or scyther. Crobat is a pretty good choice though
The thing about Crobat is that it's more difficult to evolve and has lower physical attack than the other flying Pokemon, and it can't learn a physical attack boosting move. If you want a fly user, you should probably just use a Tropius.
Man I wanted to say Murkrow but its a Diamond only Pokemon so it be a trade only possibility. Which is a shame cause I think you get the dusk stone rather early.

Like others have said Crobat is a really solid choice for these games.

But I do want to ask what level do you want to evolve your Roselia cause you will lose access to to petal dance before level 40. Just a thought cause it is plenty useful if you wanted to keep it unevolved and instead evolve your Togetic until you can get the 2nd Shiny stone after Candice
The person who posted that likes serene grace therefore he/she/they/it must be wrong.
On a slightly more serious note, that post seems to not mention stats, boosting moves, or Gyarados at all, and it says Gliscor is "a pain to evolve" for some reason.
@Jman Roselia learns giga drain very early in this game, and once you have that, waiting for petal dance probably isn't worth it.
giga drain is only 60 Power vs Petal dance's 90 in gen4. Just an idea since Roselia easily deals with any rock, ground, water type up to the point they get another shiny stone.
Giga drain heals the user, and petal dance locks the user into a move that a lot of Pokemon resist. Unless petal dance does get you specific OHKOs or 2HKOs in boss battles that you can't get with giga drain, I'd say Roserade's 4 best moves are giga drain, growth, sludge bomb, and shadow ball.

Crobat @ metronome ("flying up high" should count as a successful use so you should get a free 10% boost each time fly hits an opponent)
EVs: 100 Atk
- fly
- cross poison
- screech/X-scissor/zen headbutt
- screech/X-scissor/zen headbutt

This Pokemon is obtainable very early and ends up with okay physical attack. If you catch the level 3 Zubat in Ravaged Path, it'll probably evolve into Crobat around the time you battle Maylene. After fully evolving, it unfortunately still has less physical attack (and less useful coverage moves) than some of your other options, and it doesn't learn any attack-boosting moves (without breeding).

Gliscor @ expert belt/earth plate/soft sand
Ability: hyper cutter
EVs: 100 Spe
- earthquake
- swords dance
- aerial ace
- ice fang/stone edge

This Pokemon learns swords dance, and its physical defense, speed, and defensive typing all make it easier to set up a sweep. Its offensive typing and coverage moves let it do super effective damage against a lot of opponents. It does need the earthquake TM to work, so the rest of your team has to either give up ground coverage or use a weaker move like dig.

Gyarados @ mystic water/splash plate/metronome
EVs: 100 Atk
- waterfall
- dragon dance
- ice fang
- return/earthquake

Gyarados's high physical attack, solid offensive and defensive typing, and dragon dance make it one of the best Pokemon in the game. Unfortunately, it learns only one flying attack, which is post-game exclusive. If you use Gyarados, be sure to catch a Magikarp with a good rod (try to get one between level 15 and 22) so you don't need to exp. share train it for like 10 levels.

Scyther @ silver powder/insect plate/metronome/sky plate
Ability: technician
EVs: 100 Spe
- aerial ace
- swords dance
- X-scissor
- brick break

This is another powerful swords dance user. Scyther's offensive typing isn't great and it has 5 weaknesses, but it also has high physical attack and speed and a good ability. If you use Scyther, buy a swords dance TM, as it's pretty cheap and lets Scyther learn the move a lot earlier.

Honchkrow isn't available in Platinum.
Really? Oh you’re right. Okay I’ll delete it
Whenever you make an answer but someone else is bigger than yours and has more upvotes nobody even sees it….
I learned how to write these kinds of answers by being an active user on Smogon's in-game tiers subforum for more than a year and playing Platinum on an emulator multiple times. I don't expect you (or anyone else) to do what I did, because that honestly probably wasn't a great use of my own time, but you could at least read this: https://pokemondb.net/pokebase/429049/tips-advice-for-a-pokemon-playthrough
The reason you didn't get any upvotes is this answer offers no advice, not because people didn't see it or because people don't like you. There's nothing wrong with it but it's just a list of facts you can find on a pokedex site. The other answer recommends Pokemon and explains why they're good.
