here's how to make your ferrothron a great staler.

first you want it to have a impish nature. that cuts speed for defense
second for it's ability iron barbs. that's it signature ability
third have it hold the rocky helmet that with iron barbs is sure to annoying those physical types
forth EVs in defense and sph defense
and finally it's moves
first have it know toxic the TM is in the sea side cave
second curse cuts speed (like it can out speed anything) for attack and defense
third payback is always fun if it moves last in battle it has a power of 100 rather than 50
and forth explosion to deal a lot of pain for when your health is in the red

now just some final things this works for my play style and by mo means am i competitive my online play record is as good as glass Joe's i just like to have a little fun and if your like me it will work fine
Just to clarify, impish nature cuts SPECIAL ATTACK for defense, not SPEED. Relaxed nature will cut speed for defense.

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet

Trait: Iron Barbs

EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Def / 4 HP

Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)

  • Power Whip
  • Payback
  • Curse
  • Gyro Ball

Power Whip Great STAB Without Side Effects
Payback Coverage Dealing x2 Damage due to Speed.
Curse Raises Attack / Defense & Lowers Speed
Gyro Ball 1 Hit K.O. After Curse

This build is a Combo between a Physical Wall and a Physical Sweeper. By using curse your Defense and Offense go up as your Speed goes down. Gyro Ball, the slower the user, the greater the damage. As you gain power and prepare you not only can take physical hits, you bounce alot of damage back with the Rocky Helmet / Iron Barbs combo.

one of my favourite Pokemon

Adamant nature for +atk -sp.atk

Ability: Iron Barbs
Held Item: Rocky Shelmet XD

This is what I used for the in-game, and I really like it:

Seed Bomb/Power Whip - I like Seed Bomb for consistency, but if you want the force you know what to go for.

Thunder Wave - slow em down, cause snorlax runs faster than this guy. cant blame him, he only has those puny vines to drag his giant steel head around

Iron Head - strong attack, and with Thunder Wave, it lets you utilize the flinching effect

Rest - I dont know why more people dont use this, but its great with thunderwave, and hes a brick house. I wouldn't use it against sp.atk Pokemon, but if hes put up against a physical attacker [and that's the point right?], let it kill itself while Ferro catches up on some Z's.

why not leech seed over Rest? or a Leftovers + Leech seed combo?

New to this, bear with me.

Gyro Ball Gives you STAB, with Curse becomes beastly.
Seeb Bomb Powerful, yet unreliable. Power Whip also works, but Seed Bomb is better IMO.
Bulldoze Screw you other Steel Types. Also works on Fire Types that could take out Ferrothron.
Curse Boost for attack, defense, and even helps boost Gyro Ball for even more beastly STAB.

Hope this helps.

Explosion for killing everything when the job is done.
Aerial Ace is for hitting everything, Shadow Claw for coverage or Payback for making use of this terrible speed.

I've used this moveset with my level 84 Ferrothorn and it's great:

  • Power Whip
  • Iron Head
  • Bulldoze
  • Hone Claws

Power up accuracy and Attack with Hone Claws, making Power Whip more reliable. Bulldoze is great for Fire-types, and lower's speed. People seem to be using Gyro Ball with Bulldoze, which makes no sense because Bulldoze lowers Speed and higher opposing Speed is crucial for Gyro Ball to work the best. Iron Head is the better choice here. c:

Ah, Ferrothorn, how much I love you...

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252HP - 252Sp. Def - 4Def
Nature: Careful (+Sp. Def, -Sp. Atk)

  • Stealth Rock
  • Spikes / Thunder Wave / Toxic
  • Leech Seed
  • Protect

Stealth Rock is basically a given on Ferrothorn, if it's not Banded/All Out Attack, it has Stealth Rock. Spikes is also very helpful to get all the hazards up with one Pokémon, but can be replaced by Thunder Wave to help piss off opponents, or Toxic to take them down twice as quick with Leech Seed wracking up damage. Leech Seed is double the recovery, paired with Leftovers. Finally, Protect is used to scout out moves, get four times the healing if you have Leech Seed set up, stall out Toxic damage if you have Toxic on the set, give them another chance to get fully paralyzed if you have Thunder Wave on the set, and just stall out PP. Probably the second most useful move, next to Stealth Rock.

This was a mouthful, or rather, a typeful, but I hope it helped you out!

I have 3 different Ferrothorns. Each have a different role. That's how much I love this guy.

Stall defensive ferrothorn(Warning: Do not go up against any steel types when using this moveset.)

Item:Leftovers/rocky helmet

Ability:Iron barbs

Toxic: A necessity move for most stall Pokemon.

ingrain: Heals ferrothorn's hp a little each turn.

Leech seed: Steals a little health from the opponent each turn.

Explosion:Oh no my ferrothorn is about to faint. Might as well commit suicide!!! :D

Strategy:The strategy here is pretty self explanatory. You have toxic which takes more and more health from your opponent each turn. Then using ingrain will make ferrothorn gain health each turn. Then leech seed will steal some health from your opponents Pokemon each turn. Finnally when all else fails and your stalling strategy comes to an end commit suicide using explosion!!! If I die you die with me!!!

Mix attack and defensive ferrothorn:

Item:Rocky helmet/leftovers

Ability:Iron barbs.

Gyro ball: works well with that low speed ;D

Power whip:A powerful physical grass type move

shadow claw: Good move with decent power and high critical hit ratio.

Curse:Attack and defense raises but speed lowers. There are two reasons why this is good however: 1: Its speed sucked to begin with and 2: It powers up Gyroball.

Strategy: Curse will power up pretty much everything. Your attack, defense, and your move gyro ball. Shadowclaw is for incase you come across steel types. (its not super effective against them but it does do normal damage. Not to mention it can be used against other Pokemon.)

Physical sweeping Ferrothorn:

Item:Rocky helmet

Ability:Iron barbs.

Power whip: Strong physical grass move.

Gyro ball: The slower you are compared to the opponent the greater the damage.

Giga impact/shadowclaw/poison jab/bulldoze: Giga impact is a very powerful move but you must recharge for one turn. Shadowclaw has decent power and a good critical hit ratio. Poison jab is a physical poison type move with good power. Bulldoze will not only do damage but will also lower your opponents speed and is good on steel types.(though sadly this will decrease gyro balls power, you can however replace gyro ball with iron head. The choice is up to you). I personally would give mine shadowclaw but like I said before its up to you.

Swords dance/Explosion: Either faint yourself along with your opponents if your gonna faint anyways or increase your attack even further.

Strategy: Unlike the other Ferrothorns. This one is a full offensive physical sweeper. Gyro ball is used for slow users. Power whip like I said previously is a strong physical grass move. Give it another physical move of your choice. .Finally You can either give it swords dance (which will strongly increase its attack.) or give it explosion (incase your Ferrothorn is almost dead.)

TR Wall/Sweeper Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn @ Iron Ball/Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 Attack, 252 Defense, 4 HP
Nature: Brave

Seed Bomb/Power Whip
Gyro Ball
Stealth Rock/Iron Head

Seed Bomb/Power Whip for STAB (SB for reliability, PW for Power), Gyro Ball for STAB and low speed, Stealth Rock for hazard setup, Iron Head for another STAB move or against a slow opponent (Stealth Rock for a wall, Iron Head for a sweeper), and Curse boosts Attack, Defense and Gyro Ball. Since this is for a TR team, Curse actually makes you move first. You would need to rely on switching out on a singles team, as Ferrothorn cannot learn TR.

With this Gen IV metagame grass types are so I believe this should work well

Ferroseed (Hugs?)

252Defense 252SpecialDefense Rest in HP

Ingrain(Warning, only use this if you plan on staying in until you go down)
Leech Seed(You will be gaining a lot of HP back since you have base 44 HP)
Toxic(We all what this is for)
GyroBall or any move that wont make you taunt bait

[email protected] Helmet
trait:Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 Atk, 100 Def, 156 Sp.D
Nature:Brave (+Atk -Spd)
Role: Trick Room sweeper
-Power Whip
-Iron Head

Firstly, use Toxic to wear them away (not needed if the opponent is weak to grass or steel) then you can use Iron Head and Power Whip until the opponent faints. When you get low on HP, use Explosion. This will probably not be necessary however as the Rocky Helmet and Iron Barbs combo will make the opponent loose 1/4 of there health when hit, and toxic will kill them of pretty Quickly. Remember, only for use as a trick room Pokemon as it is not very good otherwise.

Hope I Helped

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs /// Nature: Careful (+SDef,-SAtk)

EVs: 252HP/ 252SDef/ 4Attack or defense .
IVs: 31 HP,Att,Def,SDef ... N/A SAtk ... 0 Speed.

Gyro Ball-Got to love that 100-150 power in most cases.

Leechseed-you can take on even fire types if you have seeded them.

Protect-to get healing from leftovers and leechseed

Curse/Stealth Rocks-your choice.... I do curse so that my curse damage is at max always plus I get an attack and defense boost I mean what else can I ask for.but stealth rocks are great if you go against alot of fire types/flying types.

I love this Pokemon it is very powerful.

Such an annoying Pokemon. That's why I love it so much. <3

HUG ME PLS (Ferrothorn) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
Impish Nature
252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
-Knock Off
-Leech Seed

Knock Off = no item = no recovery. Toxic + Leech Seed = painful residual damage. Block = no escape.
Watch as your opponent screams as their Pokemon's life is slowly drained away by a spiky metal octopus plant.

Truly horrifying.

Ferrothorn is my favorite Pokemon to use competitively. However, the set I use is just a little bit different...

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Curse
- Gyro Ball
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Just look at that. The power. I can't even. 252 Atk Landorus-T Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 106-126 (30.1 - 35.7%) -- 33.7% chance to 3HKO
(106, 108, 109, 109, 111, 112, 114, 115, 117, 117, 118, 120, 121, 123, 124, 126). 4 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 169-199 (52.9 - 62.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(169, 171, 172, 175, 177, 178, 181, 183, 184, 187, 189, 190, 193, 195, 196, 199). Curse boosts your defense. They're getting recoil from iron barbs + Rocky helmet helmet most of the time. Rest + sleep talk gives you infinite recovery. Curse also boosts the power of gyro ball twice, making the infamous "curseball" combo. And it's immune to toxic. And if it gets burned, rest nullifies it. And if it gets parahaxed, it's just boosting gyro ball even more. And it's immune to the most accurate sleep moves. Just... Just... Just brilliant. The typing, the ability, the stats, the moves... It all stacks on to create the ultimate physical wall.

Item: Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
Nature: Brave (+Atk, -Spd)
EVs: 252 HP, 128 Def, 128 Sp. Def

Gyro Ball - STAB and useful with low speed
Curse - While it raises attack and defense, the speed lowering also boosts Gyro Ball's power
Leech Seed - Sucks the life from your foes
Toxic - Can really hurt opponents overtime

This set can take away a BUNCH of health from your opponents. Iron Barbs and Rocky Helmet? Okay, typical health eliminator. Toxic? A little more health taken away. Leech Seed? Now THAT's a lot of health the opponents can lose. Plus, Ferrothorn can take a little bit of health every turn. And then Gyro Ball is already pretty powerful, but combine that with Curse and your Defense and Gyro Ball's power will rise! I use this set pretty often, and it's great if you want to use a bulky Pokemon.

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Trait: Iron Barbs
Nature: Impish (+Def, -SAtk)
EVs: 252 Def/248 HP/8 Atk

  • Stealth Rock
  • Thunder Wave
  • Leech Seed
  • Knock Off

Yes, I realize this set doesn't have any STAB moves. Stealth Rock is just setting up hazards, Thunder Wave and Leech Seed are good moves to cripple your opponent while you set up your hazards. I like to run Knock Off because it can potentially get rid of dangerous sweeper's items. You can run Power Whip or Gyro Ball in its place though, and get rid of Thunder Wave if necessary.
