Thread Information

On this thread, you can post suggestions as to what tournaments should be hosted on the site! When you post suggestions, please make sure that you include all rules that will apply to your tournament and the amount of members in it. The most popular tournaments, determined by those with the most votes, will be hosted next. Old and not-so-popular suggestions will be hidden over time to prevent clutter.

Please check through the existing answers and the tournament winners pages linked above to make sure your suggestion hasn't already been made.

Take note that these tournaments will not be hosted on the 3DS (or a Switch or whatever fancy gadget you're using nowadays), but on a Pokemon simulator called Pokemon Showdown. Also if you have a new suggestion that has not been suggested, post it and see if it gets support!

Please read the selected answer (the first answer you'll see) for additional information.

Mono-Ability Tournament

I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been thought of yet (unless it was done in the past and hidden, in which case oops). It sounded like a fun idea to me, so hope it's enjoyed.

Rules:

  • All Pokemon on a team must share an Ability, and retain that Ability throughout the tournament
  • All team members must use the shared Ability (for example, on a Sturdy team, Steelix wouldn't be able to have Sheer Force or Rock Head)
  • National Dex format

Bans:

  • Gastro Acid, Skill Swap, Entrainment, Role Play, Simple Beam, Transform, Worry Seed
  • Every Pokemon above the tier of NatDex OU

Obviously not every Ability would be viable, as there aren't enough Pokemon that can have them. Pre-evolved Pokemon are allowed, but use them at your own risk. This idea probably needs a bit of work, so feel free to suggest other rules.

just please tell me it's after 10th, I want to attend it :(
I believe it needs four upvotes to even be considered. Plus, there's a ton of tourney ideas above mine, so this probably won't be happening for a while, if at all :P
Lucky me( hope)

Now that DP remakes have been confirmed, I think it's a good time to look back to 2010, back before Dynamax, Z-moves, and Mega evolution, back when Pokemon games were still named after minerals, back when Mindy hated you so much that she actively avoided giving you a Gengar, and play the

Generation 4 Sinnoh Tournament
All battles must be played in gen 4 OU. This means using gen 4 mechanics, and Garchomp and Manaphy are banned.
You can use a Pokemon only if it's introduced in gen 4 OR on the Sinnoh Pokedex. For example, Heatran and Scizor are both allowed.
Additionally, I want to ban stealth rock, but I'll let participants vote on that.

Based on this allow list and the gen 4 OU viability rankings, the top 26 Pokemon in this tournament will probably be Heatran, appliance/alternate Rotom, Infernape, Clefable, Gyarados, Gliscor, Gengar, Bronzong, Empoleon, Magnezone, Machamp, Lucario, Roserade, Azelf, Milotic, Blissey, Uxie, Hippowdon, Scizor, Heracross, Shaymin, Mamoswine, Abomasnow, Crobat, Togekiss, and Quagsire.

I recommend reading these resources if you do not have much experience playing with gen 4 mechanics.

Dunno if this has been done yet, if it has I'll hide this. But presenting
Monotier
Rules
You have to use 6 Monotype tourney, but they must be from specific tiers as following.

  • 2 OU
  • 2UU
  • 1 RU
  • 1 NU

No SR
You can use one Pokemon from another type, but it has to be RU or NU.
This should be gen 6, so you can use MEGA POKEMON.

Banlist

  • Shellsmash Baton Pass
  • Stealth Rock (More Fire, Ice and Flying teams)

I'll come up with more if this gets more votes. Please comment on ideas as well.
It should be 16 people.
Hope you like it!

I just reformatted this because this was really badly indented. :P
Thanks
Why can't we just do Monotype but with the 13 point mixed tier rule? It gives us a lot more freedom.
Because that's a different tournament

OU Monotype Changing Tournament

Basically the rules are simple, it will be a 16 man tournament set in Gen VI. You have to create a full team based around a certain type for example Fire. All Pokémon in the team need to be at least part Fire.

Ditto is banned from competing against all types expect Normal. Mega Evolutions that aren't already banned are allowed, as long as they are in there respective type. You cannot use Mega Evolutions such as Mega Aggron in a Rock type team, regardless of it being a Steel/Rock type before Mega Evolving, since it loses it's secondary type when it Mega Evolves.

The following Abilities are Banned: Dry Skin, Flash Fire, Sap Sipper, Lightning Rod, Motor Drive, Storm Drain, Volt Absorb and Water Absorb.

Overall it would look like this:

1st Round: Fire- 16 Participants
2nd Round: Water- 8 Participants
3rd Round: Grass- 4 Participants
4th Round: Electric- 2 Participants

Types can be changed by a public vote.

Of course the normal Smogon Clauses are also in effect:

Species, Sleep, Evasion, OHKO and Moody
Latios/ Latias may not hold Soul Dew
Sand Veil and Snow Cloak Abilities are Banned
Shell Smash and Baton Pass is Banned

32 is too big.
I'll change it to 16 :)

The Metagame (tournament)

Description

This is a tournament in which the style of each round is completely different, and will be played in a different Meta. So, let's say, round One was Ou, and the Meta was Stall. All teams would have to be stall-like teams. Then it could be Round 2: Ubers, Hyper Offensive. The UU, Sun etc etc until only one competitor is left.

Too make sure the teams fit the criteria, I will be looking for someone to help out who isn't in the actual tour. . Teams will be submitted to this person (or people) to check if they fit the criteria (feel free to ask if you are not sure what the meta terms are).

Rules

16 man tour, regular smogon rule apply for each tier

Teams must be submitted by deadline date to the individual officiating the tournament

Teams must not use weather unless that is the selected Meta

No FEAR, OHKO moves, blah, blah )standard procedure stuff)

Feel free to suggest rules

http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/350-cup-pawniard-darumaka-ban.3512945/

look for the rules there, it seems like a really fun metagame. it's already been coded and is wouldn't be too hard to implement (Or it might be I don't really know), so it seems like a fun tourney c:. it would be a 16 person tourney, single elimination, and be held on our server (or any server that has it).

THE KILLZ TOURNEY

enter image description here

Welcome to the KILLZ tourney.

8-16 players, they will face each other twice, once in a Double Battle another in a Single.
The Pokemon with the most kills wins.

A Killz is when they make another Pokemon faint, it is 1 point.
Let's say, Kronos's Infernape has 23 points while other people's Pokemon have less points than that, that means that Kronos will win the tourney because his Infernape has more points than any other Person's Pokemon.

A Killz Assist is 0.5 points, if you damage a Pokemon with an attack and another Poke kills it, than the Pokemon that damaged it first gets 0.5 points.
The Pokemon that LAST attacked it before it died gets the killz assist.

Toxic, Burn damage counts for both. SR, Spikes and T-Spikes damage does not count.

The Double Battle part makes it much more interesting, it's much easier to get Killz and Killz Assist if there are 2 Pokemon on the field instead of one.

The point is to make team based around one Pokemon, try to make that Pokemon get as many Points possible so that you win the whole tourney.

Make sure to stop your opponent from killing your Pokemon!
I hope you guys like it :D
The rules are

  1. Standard OU
  2. Regular OU banlist
    Any other ideas?
If you guys didn't understand anything, feel free to tell me in the comments :D

"Win Consecutively with Rental Pokémon"
Battle Factory Tournament
Each player goes on Pokemon DB's Showdown! chat room and enters "/randpoke" until he/she/it gets six different Pokemon species. It must be on that chat room because otherwise they won't appear in logs that we can check. He/she/it must then build a team with those six species but gets to decide the other details, like moves. If a chosen species has multiple forms, the players can also pick whichever form they want. After each battle, the winner can replace up to two of his/her/its Pokemon with Pokemon species that the loser used, and is again free to modify details like moves and forms.

This is one of the tournaments where the participation must be a power of two, because each player should have the same number of chances to change their teams.
Set in Uber (to include every species but also ban stuff like double team)
Everything except species can be changed between battles.

So I got this idea from a Smogon Forums user named Mr.E. This is what he said.

It's like how chess is a cool game even though every "team" consists of the exact same pieces in the exact same starting configuration every single time. How you maneuver those pieces is just as important as the pieces you have, but ultimately being a means to entertain one's self some people prefer having a wider variety of pieces to choose from.

After thinking about this for a while, I asked myself a question. If this can be accomplished in Generation 1, why can't it be accomplished now? Without further ado, this is my answer.
OU less stuff tournament

This is identical to an OU tournament, except that players may only use Pokemon that are ranked S, S- or A+ on the OU viability rankings. Currently, these Pokemon include, and only include, Landorus, Heatran, Kartana, Clefable, Ferrothorn, battle bond Greninja, Magearna, Tapu Koko, Toxapex, and Zygarde.

“Soul Linked” - Every Pokémon on your team is Soul Linked to one of your opponent’s Pokémon. This is based on what slot they’re in. For example, if I had a Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres, Dragonite, Mew, and Gyarados-Mega and my opponent had Tyranitar, Celebi, Crabonimable, Breloom, Ariados, and Altaria, the Altaria and Mega Gyarados would be Soul Linked because they’re both in the 6th slot of both teams. Same with Ariados and Mew, Dragonite and Breloom, etc. What being Soul Linked does is that every time you knock out an opponent’s Pokémon, the Pokémon it’s Soul Linked to on your team is considered fainted and cannot be used. Anyone caught cheating will automatically be disqualified, whether it was an accident or not. The person that gets the most kills wins.

by
Format is OU.
What happens when a fainted Pokemon is switched in by roar or whirlwind?

Type Sabotage Tournament (is the name good enough now?)

This is a single elimination, best of 3 tournament. Whenever a person loses or forfeits a battle, that person picks a type. Whoever just beat that person cannot use that type of Pokemon in the rest of the tournament, including any remaining battles in the round. If the loser becomes unresponsive, then the host randomly picks the type.

Because this is single elimination, when signups close the participants will get reduced to a (integer) power of 2. So the first 16 signups play if 17-31 people sing up, the first 8 signups play if 9-15 people sign up, etc. Signups will cap at 2^(number of types/2) (currently 512) because beating any more people will lock up every type.

I think I came up with a better name.

So I'm actually surprised that nobody selected a
Balanced Hackmons Tournament!

It's a tournament in Balanced Hackmons. Any Pokemon (even AG), and:
Pokémon may not have the following abilities:
Arena Trap
Huge Power
Innards Out
Magnet Pull
Moody
Parental Bond
Protean
Psychic Surge
Pure Power
Shadow Tag
Stakeout
Water Bubble
Wonder Guard

and
Primal Groudon is banned.

Also, you can use Megas, and Alternate forms without their required items!
For instance, Mega Beedrill doesn't need to hold Beedrillite, and Ultra Necrozma doesnt need to hold Ultranecrozium Z, nor does it need a base form.

Have fun!

by
Gengarite is also banned in Balanced Hackmons. :P

Mono Letter Tournament

For a bit of a rundown, each Pokémon on a team must have the same letter at the beginning of their name. Here’s an example team:

Ampharos, Altaria, Aurorus, Alakazam, Articuno, Aggron.

As you can see, each member of that team starts with an A. Participants will be able to choose their own letter. For team variety, each person gets a different letter, first come first serve (debatable). Letters should be claimed when a participant signs up. So, if I were to choose A as my letter, I’d put that in my sign up answer.

Format: NatDex OU (oops)

I haven’t thought of any extra bans yet. With Showdown! formatting, no Pokémon changes letters, since things like Alolan forms would be formatted as something like “Raichu-Alola”. So Alolan Raichu, although it technically starts with an A, would only be compatible with an R team.

Rules:

8 participants, since there are only so many good letters in the alphabet. If rule #2 doesn’t stand (paragraph 2, after the example team), 16 participants will be fine.

Best out of 3.

No teams, just regular elimination rounds.

No Pokémon from the same evolution line (debatable).

The rules stated before the rules section :P

Have fun (not debatable)! :)

The Marvel vs Capcom Tournament!

Tournament will take place in national dex ou.
6v6
You can only have 3 Marvel and 3 Capcoms each
You must name the Pokémon based on the character you choose
No duplicates (So if you chose Scizor for Zero and want Iron man, You have to pick a Pokémon that is not Scizor)

So basically you get to choose who you want to be on your team. As long as it makes sense
For example:
Capcom:
Arcanine for Amaterasu
Lucario for Ryu
Silvally or Garchomp for Dante
Or Greninja for Strider

Marvel:
Scizor for Iron man
Aegislash for Captain America
Zeraora for Thor
Or shiny Machamp for Hulk

The characters you can use for both sides are listed (with some examples)
Capcom:
Akuma (Zoroark)
Amaterasu (Arcanine)
Arthur (Excavalier)
Albert Wesker (Mega Sableye)
Chris
Chun-li (Tserena)
Crimson Viper
Dante (Silvally or Garchomp with Mega as devil trigger)
Felicia (Meowstic)
Firebrand (Charizard / Y)
Frank West
Haggar (Machamp)
Hsien-Ko
Jill
Morrigan
Nemesis
Phoenix Wright
Ryu (Lucario)
Strider (Greninja)
Spencer
Tron (Melmetal)
Trish
Viewtiful Joe (Hawlucha)
Vergil
Zero (Scizor)
Jedah
Megaman X (Galarian Slowbro)
Monster Hunter (Excadrill)
Sigma (Porygon Z)

Marvel:
Captain America (Aegislash)
Deadpool
Dr Doom
Dr Strange (Alakazam)
Dormammu
Ghost Rider
Hawkeye (Decidueye)
Hulk (Shiny Machamp)
Iron Fist (Any fighting type with iron fist like Infernape)
Iron Man (Scizor)
Magneto (Magnezone)
MODOK
Nova
Phoenix (Moltres)
Rocket Racoon (Linoone)
She-Hulk
Shuma Gorath
Super Skrull
Sentinel (Melmetal)
Storm (Thundurus)
Taskmaster (Decidueye or Aegislash)
Thor (Zeraora)
Wolverine and X-23 (Excadrill)
Black Panther
Black Widow
Captain Marvel
Gammora
Thanos
Ultron
Venom
Winter Soldier

The Pokémon listed next to them aren’t needed, you can pick any you want. They have to make sense though

For example, my team would be:
Amaterasu (Arcanine)
Zero (Scizor)
Ryu (Lucario)
Hawkeye (Decidueye)
Iron Fist (Infernape)
Dr Strange (Alakazam)

Pokémon Characters Tour!
Ok let me explain. It's basically, you can use the Pokémon used by any character appearing in anime and/or games.
For example, if I pick Lance, I can use each and every Pokémon he has used in anime and games till now. You need not pick a character and stick to it for the whole tour. If I pick Lance Round 1, I can switch to Sidney round 2 and use his Pokémon. This brings a lot of thrill as you don't know who and what are you going to face. Let's go over the rules:
Format: National Dex OU
Because some mons aren't available in galar OU.
Megas and z moves: Allowed (debatable)
Using any Pokémon that's not used by the trainer is not allowed (debatable)
But it will be not allowed to such characters which are not type specialists such as Red.
Player limit: 32
Hope you like this tour and do sign up for it! :)

by
This would be such a fun tournament
I actually did something similar with my friend once lol
it was fun
also its rude you don't let me use shauna bruh-
You can use Shauna. Wdym?
You can't use those Pokémon which Shauna doesn't use that's all. Sorry if you misunderstood xd
"But it will be not allowed to such characters which are not type specialists such as Red."
Shes not a type specialist, meaning i cant user her if i understand correctly
Nah drowydragcloak you misunderstood.
Sorry it's my mistake I'll try to explain.
>Using any Pokémon that's not used by the trainer is not allowed (debatable)
But it will be not allowed to such characters which are not type specialists such as Red.

It's the continuation of that rule. If that rule is removed, it will still stay for non type specialist trainers. Means that you can't use those mons Shauna doesn't use but you can use those mons she has used :)
Wait but than what is the point Of choosing trainers if you can use mons they didnt use?
You can't do that LoL
I request you read my message and post again xd

I wanted to add this in my other answer but I don't think im allowed to SO

Use the worse moves/abilites tour

aka
unban good mons but they are bad
Unbanned mons(from ou)
this can also be done in later generations via what has been banned via quickbanns or suspects and determine what made them broken

Magearna!(yay) but you cant use fleur cannon nor stored power nor calm mind
Cinderace!(yay) but you cant use pyro ball and u turn
Urshifu-S(yay) but you cant use wicked blow
Dracovish!(but...) you cant use fishous rend
Kyurem black but you cant use dd nor icicle spear
Zamazenta-c but you cant use close combat
Zygarde(not complete) but you cant use thousand arrows or thousand waves
Naganadel but no draco meteor nor sludge wave
Genesect but no U-turn nor iron head nor leech life nor flash cannon or bug buzz
Lando-i but not sheer force
Reshiram but no blue flare or fusion flare or fire blast or draco meteor

Of course I likely missed some and some still might be broken cause they are banned for a reason
so you can determine what other ones to keep banned/to allow but nerf

Considering that we might want to ban some things midway or so, I also wanna say that after every round there should be a part where members can ask to reban something, just so there isn't some broken mon still running around.

by
edited by
Wait, Reshiram was actually allowed before?
no but I kinda used the oubl theory (if it existed, itd be al the really bad ubers)
considering it only has 150 sp atk, which there are many more power crept high attacking stat mons, plus the fact it doesn't have good dragon stab. They can also consider getting rid of flamethrower too

also I just made that list for what I thought but of course theyre would likely be a new banlist based on what the participants want.
Can we just unban every Ubers Pokemon in this tournament?
Yea? I dont know exactly what moves you would ban but if someone could determine which ones would be fair (and of course it can be fone tuned after) it would definitely work
2 votes

Hmmm...The Item Moveset Tourney!
The game is you pick something, Detectives, Criminals, Movies, Etc. and you have to make a Moveset based off that!
For example, if you have a Beauty Team, you could have
Gardevoir
Charm
Dazzling Gleam
Attract
Flash

After you're defeated, you tell the other person what you got your team from. He/She can either choose to leave his/her team the same, or change it to your team.

Bans-

Items

OP Legendaries

OP Megas

by
edited by
Not all legendaries and Megas need to be banned. Just make it standard OU rules, that gets rid of anything that's overpowered. And unless it's part of the tourney's theme, I see no reason to ban items.
I love how "Flash" is a beauty move.
And- OH WHY YOU SEXIST LITTLE...

Evil Magikarps

I know this seems weird, but it may be fun. Every team consists of 6 Magikarps. The twist is that you can add any move. It will be a 16 player championship. Once all your Magikarps are defeated, you are out of the tournament.

Matchups

Two people are randomly chosen. The loser gets DQ, and the winner gets paired with another random opponent. This is repeated until there is only one person left, who is crowned the winner.

Rules:

  • Grass and Electric type moves are banned
  • Rain Dance and Sunny Day are the only usable status moves (debatable)
  • Moves that have less than 8 or more than 32 PP are banned (debatable)
  • Moves cannot exceed 75 damage (debatable)
  • Each Magikarp must have at least 1 physical and 1 special moves
  • Magikarp's Revenge is banned (debatable; it is a funny move that I would love to see in action. If it is allowed, only one Magikarp can have it.)
  • You cannot use items that restore HP (debatable)
  • Magikarp that have the ability Swift Swim cannot have Rain Dance
  • Magikarp can only have it's regular and hidden abilities.
  • Transform, sketch, and mimic are banned.
  • You can only change the HP EVs/IVs. (debatable)
  • OHKO moves are banned
by
edited by
Why those types of moves?
I tried ti think of the evilest typings there are. That narrowed it down to only Dark, Ghost, Poison, Fighting, and maybe Steel/Bug.
I think it'll be better if they weren't limited to evil-seeming types. You should still ban grass and electric moves, though.
What about status Grass/Electric moves?
2 votes

This is probably the weirdest tournament idea I'll ever have that isn't based on an anime.

Smeargle Tournament
This will be single elimination done in Anything Goes of the latest generation. It will clauses of whatever the lowest tier Smeargle is allowed in, with the following changes.

  • Species clause doesn't apply.
  • All Pokemon on a team must have visibly different nicknames. For example, one team can't have a Pokemon nicknamed "Smeargle" with an L and a Pokemon nicknamed "SmeargIe" with an i.
  • The only Pokemon species allowed is Smeargle.

Since the clauses aren't enforced automatically (we could do custom game, I guess), anyone who breaks them should be disqualified.
I have been expecting you to make this pun since before I posted this answer. That's because I can do a bit of mind reading. I may be sounding kind of sketchy here, but I can assure you it's true.
