Charizard (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Belly Drum
- Earthquake
- Fire Punch
- Substitute
Charmeleon (M) @ Salac Berry
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Belly Drum
- Fire Punch
- Crunch
- Brick Break
Charizards tier is nu.

Idk why it is very stupid of smogon.
It's NU for a reason.
For those wondering why Zard was NU for 3 gens straight, it was because of its Stealth Rock weakness. Stealth Rock cuts Charizard's HP in half, and since Solar Power takes 12% of the user's HP every turn, Charizard would not last very long at all, especially when you count its middling speed, at least compared to OU's speedsters like Greninja, Garchomp, Tapu Koko, etc... It sat in NU for 3 generations where it was the best offensive Pokemon in the tier until it couldn't keep up and was sent to PU. However thanks to the excellent Heavy-Duty boots it doesn't need to sit in the lowest of the low anymore and is in RU as of right now, but can be a devastating OU threat too.

there geodudedude i'm 6 years late but here's your answer
Also Charizard pretty much just sucks when it's not Mega Evolved lol
yeah, except when in sun. Sun Charizard is ranked C on Sw/Sh OU's viability rankings last time i checked

Alright, a Physical Tank. Really, I'm serious. 280 max defense is sweet.

Charizard (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Flare Blitz
- Earthquake
- ThunderPunch
- Brick Break

Leftovers is for recovery, a vital part of any Tank. Blaze is nice. Evs give it some Physical bulk. Flare Blitz is STAB, along with being killer with Blaze. Another nice bonus is it helps you get to Blaze faster. Earthquake kills. Period. Also nicely covers Electric. ThunderPunch covers Water, while having a parachance. Brick Break breaks Screens, and covers Rock. Nobody expects this. Who uses a Sweeper as a Tank? Me.

This is a physical set, and an old physical set for that matter.
a tank isnt a tank without high hp
Why flare blitz without roost? I know it's high bp and STAB but recoil on a tank doesn't work out so well
Because you can get to Blaze-boosting faster. Oh yeah, that fact that you have Earthquake... nicely done, with all those 4x rock pokemon, so I don't think that Brick Break is neccessarily needed, even if it can cover screens.
"physical tank"
So, you're using a 4x stealth rock weak pokemon as a tank, giving it Flare Blitz to activate blaze, which works at low health, and no will-o-wisp or roost? Like come on. You don't want your "tank" to drop below 1/3 or 1/2 of its max HP. And all bulky pokemon need recovery, 1/16 every turn isn't enough

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze (Tough Claws)
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Claw/Outrage
- Earthquake

You know how just frickin epic Ash Charizard was? Then you realised Ash isn't very good with Pokemon and Charizard really wasn't very good due to its underwhelming stats and Stealth Rock weakness? Well, it is finally time for revenge.
Behold, the harbinger of ultimate destruction. With its monstrous attack, great speed and sweet new Ability, this slick dragon is dressed to the nines to kill. As of now this set have no tier since the Gen 6 tiers haven't been established yet, but seeing this from Gen 5s perspective, this will be a force to be reckoned with.
The strategy is simple, send out as fast as possible and transform into Mega Charizard X, set up a Dragon Dance, then sweep to your hearts content.
Dragon Dance is the key to make this work. Fire, Ground and Dragon gives perfect coverage in UU and solid cover in OU, and a single DD allows it to outspeed anything unscarfed in both tiers. The sheer power is enough to demolish most things even dedicated to stoping it.

by
Let’s not talk about Ash.
whats UU, OU, and DD?
UU and OU are tiers in Pokemon. UU is UnderUsed and OU is OverUsed. For more info I recommend going to smogon or bulbapedia or a site like that. DD stands for Dragon Dance. Some moves are shortened and referred to that way such as EQ for Earthquake, Rocks for Stealh Rocks, etc.

Charizard (M) @ Leftovers

Role: Sunny Sweeper
Trait: Solar Power
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Air Slash
- Flamethrower
- SolarBeam
- Dragon Pulse

Okay, I'm going to start off by saying this set only works in the sun.

Flamethrower gives you a nasty STAB move that destroys most Pokemon in one hit.

While Solar Beam Is instant in the sun, And covers all of Charizards Weaknesses.
Dragon Pulse is strictly For Dragon's to take them out as fast as you can.

And Air Slash is For flying STAB, and Also if you REALLY wanna press your luck With flinch hax.

Leftovers is the item of Choice to heal off Sun damage.

It's funny cause in 2013 megazard y gets drought.
Also I'd suggest putting that extra 4 evs in defence or special defence based on the metagame/preference cause it's good to have an odd numbered hp at lvl 100 since it's 4 times weak to rocks, for substitute, etc.
This is my exact moveset.
What about 'lectrics?
I realized by SpD he means Speed, not Special Defense. Timid Nature is +Speed -Atk
Wow really?

This is similar to J98's set, but it is a scarfer with *slightly better coverage.

Negrozard (Charizard) (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Solar Power
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Flamethrower
- SolarBeam
- Hidden Power [Rock] / [Ground]
- Dragon Pulse

Basically, Scarf makes it outspeed just about anything, while Solar Power acts as Choice Specs on this set. Flamethrower is huge STAB in the sun. Solarbeam covers rock and water resistance as well as hitting ground types hard. Hidden Power [Rock] covers other Charizards and other fire types that resist STAB, Ground can also be good to hit Heatran and electric types (Flamethrower is stronger on electrics). Dragon Pulse hits resistant dragons and it has a huge neutral coverage.
This guy works great with a Magic Bouncer or Rapid Spinner to deflect or clear Stealth Rocks, as well as a Drought Ninetales. I like the nickname as Negro is Spanish for black, and it sounds way cooler than Blackzard on a Shiny Charizard.

by
"scarfer" or "scarier"?
omg "negro" lol
That's cool but why hidden power rock when he gets ancient power as an egg move, it doesn't sacrifice speed ivs so he can always outspeed other zards and it has a chance to raise all his stats? Not sure if this is because I'm commenting in 2014 and it's a new thing...
I just realised prior to gen 6 the base power was higher... sorry. But ancient power is a way cooler alternative now.
Nero is italian for black.
Wait if he has choice  scarf won't he burn it?

Gen III

Charizard (M) @ Charcoal

Ability: Blaze

EVs: 200 Atk / 180 SAtk / 128 Spd

Naughty Nature (+Atk, -SDef)

  • Dragon Dance
  • Fire Blast - Special
  • Earthquake - Physical
  • Focus Punch - Physical

Dragon Dance lets you screw over a few speed EV's and go mixed, this guy works great with it.

Charcoal, Blaze ( Possibly ) , and STAB. Makes Fire Blast a deadly Shock even though it's not getting the Attack boost from Dragon Dance, This guy just isn't himself without Fire STAB.

Earthquake gets great type coverage!

Focus Punch Can take out threats such as Snorlax, ( Who needs curse to live off of physical hits ) for super effective damage quickly and painfully.
With good prediction, this move can be really good.

Double/Triple Battle Charizard

Charizard (M) @ Life Orb

Trait: Blaze/Solar Power
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Heat Wave
- Air Slash/Air Cutter
- Dragon Pulse
- Tailwind/Protect/Focus Blast/Fire Pledge

Blaze should be the ability used if you don't have Sunny Day support. If you do have Sunny Day Support, then use Solar Power. Heat Wave is STAB that hits multiple foes. A great move. Air Slash can be used in Double Battles as just a powerful STAB. or in Triple Battles you can use it to hit any foe on the battlefield. Air Cutter hits multiple foes, but has low base Power. Also, it cannot be used with Solar Power. Dragon Pulse gives you neutral coverage only resisted by Heatran. It can also hit any foe on the field in a Triple Battle. The last move you have plenty of choices. Tailwind can be used to support the team (and make Charizard faster) but it can't be used with Solar Power. Protect is just your basic multi-battle move. It protects Charizard from enemy attacks and ally Surfs and Discharges. Focus Blast is type coverage. Fire Pledge can be used if you want to set up a field effect along with Grass Pledge or Water Pledge.

why Lefties? Isnt it better for blaze to activate?
Oops, forgot to copy+paste the edited set with Lum Berry. Used to have Leftovers to help with Belly Drum, then I remembered Blaze, so I replaced it with Lum Berry. I always forget to copy, although at least this time I didn't post a Tauros moveset in the Gyarados question.

Thanks for the memory jog.
salac is better get dat speed boost

VCG Charizard

Charizard (M)@Charizardite X
enter image description here
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs:252 Spd, 174 Hp, 62 Atk, 20 Def
Lv:50
Nature: Jolly

-Dragon Dance (great set-up move)
-Roost (reliable recovery)
-Outrage (Powerful STAB attack)
-Earthquake (IT'S EARTHQUAKE, nuf said)

The Hp invetment let's him live a HUGE amount of hits, while powerful attacks provide massive damage. Roost alows for relible recovery, useful in VCG for a set without Protect. This set is to used mostly as an M-Salamence counter, though anything switching into an Outrage (unless its a fairy) or Earthquake (unless they are flying or have Levitate) will loose a decent chunk of health.

Calcs

>252+ Atk Mega Salamence Earthquake vs. 174 HP / 20 Def Mega Charizard X: 122-144 (69.7 - 82.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

>252+ Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 174 HP / 20 Def Mega Charizard X: 142-168 (81.1 - 96%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

>252+ Atk Mega Salamence Dragon Claw vs. 174 HP / 20 Def Mega Charizard X: 146-174 (83.4 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

>64 Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Outrage vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Salamence: 192-228 (112.2 - 133.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

>64 Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Outrage vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hydreigon: 186-218 (93.4 - 109.5%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

>4 Atk Aegislash-Shield Shadow Sneak vs. 174 HP / 20 Def Mega Charizard X: 13-16 (7.4 - 9.1%) -- possibly the worst move ever

>252+ SpA Aegislash-Shield Flash Cannon vs. 174 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 24-29 (13.7 - 16.5%) -- possible 7HKO

>252+ SpA Aegislash-Shield Shadow Ball vs. 174 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 49-58 (28 - 33.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

>64 Atk Mega Charizard X Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 52-62 (31.1 - 37.1%) -- 64.4% chance to 3HKO

>+1 64 Atk Mega Charizard X Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 78-94 (46.7 - 56.2%) -- 76.2% chance to 2HKO

WARNING: TOGEKISS WRECKS THIS SET

Gen V

Charizard (M) @ Petaya Berry

Trait: Blaze

EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd

Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)

  • Flamethrower
  • Hidden Power [Grass]
  • Dragon Pulse
  • Substitute

Okay, I love this set. I use it also on a team that gets Agility boosts passed from a Durant, but this works well even without that. Okay you use Substitute three times, which will then activate your Petaya Berry and also Blaze. This will leave you with an incredibly powerful Flamethrower, plus a nicely powered HP Grass and Dragon Pulse, which are there for coverage. It is a great Pokemon, and I use this set for my Charizard. You've probably had to face this guy before.

Death Dragon!

Nature: Timid
Item: Leftovers/Salac-berry
Ability: Solar-power
EVs: 252 S.attack, 252 Speed, 6 Hp

Flamethrower/Heat-wave/Fire-blast
Dragon-pulse
Solar-beam
Air-slash/HP(Ground)/Sunny-day

Flamethrower is more reliable but Heat-wave has that little extra bit of power Fire-blast is very strong but it is very inaccurate I would just go with Flamethrower. Dragon-pulse has great neutral coverage and the only things that resist it are steel types which are weak to fire moves. Solar-beam provides coverage against his weaknesses and has insane power. Air-slash is for STAB and Flinch, HP(Ground) covers his Electric type weakness, Sunny-day is there for if he is not on a drought team. Leftovers heals off Solar-power damage though the Salac-berry is another option for some speed.

Edit by J98: Added sprite since old one was from an expired site and wasn't showing.

Edit by Fizz: Doing the same thing many years later. :^)

This set is for wrecking teams with sheer power. This one is only for use in the sun:
Charizard @ Choice Specs
enter image description here
Ability: Solar Power
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Timid Nature
Fire Blast
Solar Beam
Dragon Pulse
Focus Blast
This Charizard is designed to hit like a truck. Look at how much damage a gem boosted fire blast would do:

Will this set work for Mega Charizard Y?
2 votes

Mega Charizard Y @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 sp. attack, 252 speed, 4 def
Nature: Timid
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Dragon Pulse / Air Slash

I personally like Mega Charizard Y more than the X alternative. Even if it still has the 4x Stealth Rocks weakness, and Drought's usefulness has been almost completely axed, this Pokemon still has base 159 special attack and should not be underrated.

This set is like the Choice Specs Ninetales, abusing max power Fire Blasts and Solar Beams, but with more overall Super Effective coverage with Focus Blast and Air Slash. Dragon Pulse can also be used, but only if dragon types are feared in whatever tier this Pokemon ends up in.

Doubles Mega-Charizard Y

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Solar Power/Blaze
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid/Modest Nature
- Heat Wave
- Air Slash
- Protect
- Focus Blast/Solar Beam

With weather being nerfed weather mons do best as offensive threats rather than support, and charizard can fulfill that role to the fullest, especially in tandem with a chlorophyll sweeping partner. *Solar Power is used over blaze as it is recommended that another sun setter be used in tandem with charizard as to ensure maximum power, but if that is not the case then Blaze is the better choice.

by
Mega Charizard Y has the ability Drought.

Charizard-Mega-Y @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Drought
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roost (recovery)
- Solar Beam (with drought it becomes an amazing coverage move)
- Heat Wave (Stab)
- Air Slash(stab)

Doubles / Triples

Charizard (M) @ Choice Specs
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Heat Wave
- Air Cutter
- Ominous Wind
- Fire Blast

Heat Wave gives STAB and hits both opponents.
Air Cutter is STAB and hits both opponents.
Ominous wind is coverage and ( I think ) hits both opponents.
Fire Blast is STAB if you want to take the single approach.

Try this with sunny day in progress.

Charizard @ Choice Specs
Trait: Solar Power
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Flamethrower
- Dragon Pulse
- Solarbeam
- Hidden Power [Ground]

With his special attack reaching 712, it can take out almost any Pokemon. Just make sure you time his switch in properly!

The perfect learnset for a charizard:

If it has solar power ability:

-air slash: STAB, may cause flinching, decent power, good accuracy.

-heat wave/flamethrower: STAB, good power, very good accuracy, powered up by solar power, flamethrower has better pp but heat wave can hit all opponents.

-solarbeam: very good power and accuracy, doesn't require 2 turns with solar power, great against rock types (due to the 4x weakness) and water types (2x weakness).

-counter/earthquake: counter would be great against a rock type causing an incredibly powerful counter-attack with double power, but only with a focus band/sash attached or rock moves could be lethal. And earthquake would be great agains electric types (2x weakness) and rock types too.
(earthquake might be a little better).

Item attached:
- if charizard knows counter, a focus band or focus sash should fit perfectly for a powerful combo.
- if not, leftovers can be good for restoring hp, charcoal to power (even more) up fire tipes, miracle seed to make solarbeam lethal, sharp beek to make air slash stronger, soft sand to increase earthquake's power, life orb, berries, etc.

Finally, iv's and ev's :
Personally, i'd rather train my charizard in special attack than in attack (knowing that solarbeam, heat wave, flamethrower and air slash are special), even though you should be aware of attack since charizard cannot learn a special ground-type move and earthquake is a fisical one. Also, instead of counter you can teach charizard superpower if you want to raise sp. atk. to it's maximum.
Speed is very important for a charizard, it must be pretty high. Train it.
The hp would probably require to be trained a little more, or instead raise defense more, if not rock-type attacks might, and will, be lethal.

Note: a charizard with solar power ability might be pretty rare, if don't have one, here could be a good learnset:

-air slash
-heat wave/flamethrower
-solarbeam
-sunny day

If you think electric types are uncovered, take the risk and, instead of one less turn of solarbeam, replace sunny day for earthquake.

The truth is there isn't a rule for this, everyone has it's own playing style and techniques. and every choice you take will be great if you train hard and wisely.

First post, sorry for the length :)
Hope this helps!

Charizard is a boss so why not give him a good set? I prefer a Special Sweeper.
Item : Charcoal
Ability: Blaze

252 Special Attack, 252 Speed, and 4 Defense.

Moveset : OUTRAGE - because it is amazing.
Flamethrower/Fire Blast - If you prefer more power or accuracy.
Air Slash - Easy Critical hits.
Focus Blast - for Rock types.

Hope this works out for you.

This set really only works if you are using Charizard as a speed sweeper.

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Drought
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

Moveset:
Overheat (STAB)
Solar Beam (coverage for water and rock types)
Roost/Flamethrower (healing as needed/lower power STAB that doesn't reduce stats)
Dragon Pulse (anti-dragon/coverage)

Given that the mega evolution for Charizard in Y drastically improves its special attack and gives it the drought ability which increases the damage from fire moves and gets rid of the charge turn of solar beam, it is ideal for those that want a Charizard that quickly gets rid of opponents. Also makes it so you don't have to waste a turn on sunny day while the increased stat boost makes up for not using an item that increases those stats like the "choice items".

Physical Charizard

Charizard @ Leftovers
Ability: Solar Power
Adamant/Jolly Nature
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
- Thunder Punch
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Rush
- Swords Dance

Thunder Punch is to deal with Water types
Flare Blitz for some awesome STAB, Leftovers will heal you
Dragon Rush to deal with OU Dragons
Swords Dance for some powerful sweeping
